OT-Do You Agree With Pete Townshend
Posted by: CrazyDadda ()

Pete Townshend told us that the modern Who audience, which factors in many younger, less die-hard fans than back in the '70s and '80s, is more concerned with being entertained than in previous eras: "What's actually changed for us is that our audience has actually become the audience. It's not the Who audience anymore, it is the audience. When you go and play a festival now, you see young people who are willing to sit and watch the (Red Hot) Chili Peppers, you know, the Who, this artist, that artist and so on."

It's hard to tell what he's talking about, which is an improvement in his case.

Jeez! Forty Niks get a life. Townshend is totally against child porn! That case was cleared! Do some research and you will actually see that that case was a bunch of media hype bull...

I guess that interview answers the question as to whether Pete is drinking again.....

pete dosen't agree with himself often. when he realizes this he makes a statement which he later comes to regret, and then needs to publically disavow. sigh. at least he's thinking about it. and then he thinks about thinking about it; and how that might affect the way he's thinking about it in the long run? whooo, i mean it ain't easy bein' pete...what are you insinuating mr. slide, that he needs to cut down down on caffiene? ;-)
i'l most certainly agree...well let's hope he's 'sober' and well and just talking himself up his own keister...
used to be one of the finest interviews in the biz and in the culture acutally.
not he kinda dribbles...or at least that's how it's printed...gazza was making a good point on another thread recently, about the origins and contexts of such quotes, and where they're prsented etc...so who knows for sure...does sound like dribbly confused shite to me...maybe a desperate headline or promo piece for radio ad or whatnot who knows...maybe pete needs that beautiful model wife to wipe the dribble off his chin and shut him oop ocasionally...whoever knows with these stars...strange people, these show business folks i tell ya...strange...

Pete has never articulated himself well in print interviews. Research how his interview in Timothy White's book came across back around 1990. It made it sound like Pete said "I am a woman" and that made some strange press for a while.

Hello There,

The one thing I can tell you about any of PT's pronouncements through the years is that he believes 100% what he says, when he says it-he is being sincere.

May well be talking bollocks (not unlike meself) but it is sincere bollocks.

Nah,he ain't drinking,thank goodness-hopefully never will either.

It isn't difficult to see what his point is,with respect to the mix of punters who see the band.

As has been posted many times before, even accurately transcribed interviews don't always give you the full meaning.

If possible,it is always preferable to see and hear the subject,to allow you to pick-up say, facial expressions or intonations of voice to fill in the gaps,so-to-speak.

Keith would be a fine example of this!

Cheers,

Si.

In fact there never was a case as Pete wasn't actually charged.....

But why wasnt he charged? Didnt he download child porn?

because,as has been discussed many times before, the police believed his story that it was for research purposes for an anti-child porn essay and not for gratification. The reason why he was questioned was because he used his credit card to access an illegal site.

As the law stands, by doing that, youre breaking the law even if its done unwittingly, but after seizing his computers and questioning him extensively, they were satisfied with his explanation. He was given a caution purely on the technicality which was that by paying to access such sites for ANY reason is against the law

>Didnt he download child porn?

No. He didnt. Had he done so he would have been charged and almost certainly jailed.

Always better to listen to Pete's music than to listen to him talk.

If he talks long enough he usually disagrees with himself.

Apparently a lot of people on here were touched in improper places by their wicked uncle Ernie and so are a bit sensitive on the matter.

Yeah, you should, Unlike Glitter, Pete is not and never was a paedophile. Whitem8 summed that matter up very succinctly - it was media bullshit that got blown out of proportion and distorted to make a basically innocent guy look guilty of a heinous crime. The real facts of the case are out there, and, were you to look into the matter, you'll find out the extent to which the media will go to avoid the facts from getting in the way of a good story.

You may also want to consider the following: Gary Glitter's internet porn conviction justifiably KILLED his career in the UK (he was previously big on the live circuit), and the US not only barred him from entering the country, but the NFL stopped playing "Rock N Roll Part 2" at touchdown.

The US authorities let Pete in after the incident without a problem. And those harshest judges of all - the fans who have made the current Who tour a huge success (not to mention putting Endless Wire in the Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic) - have accepted that he was basically an innocent, if very naive man, who got pilloried for trying to do a lot more than the authorities in the UK were doing to clamp down on internet porn.

Pete is publishing the first volume of his autobiography (which, in part, details the sexual abuse he suffered by a relative - which prompted his research into child porn (and yes, it really was "research" - that's what writers do)) quite soon, so you'll be able to read all about what made him do what he did. It's heartbreaking stuff.

He's echoing what Dylan said very recently about people only coming to see him so they could tick it off a list of "Seen that legend before he's croaked .... NEXT!" fans.

If thats your excuse - even if lighthearted - for people explaining the facts behind the reason why he wasnt charged, its an accusation in pretty poor taste.

AS I stated above, Forty Niks get a life! You keep digging yourself into a deeper hole and looking like an ignorant ass. Best for you to move on to a new thread.

Hmm, you know, Pete Townshend is one of the folks I'd love to meet. Sweet, humble, arrogant, charming, irascible, funny, deadly earnest, all at the same time!

need I remind you diehard stones fanatics that Mr. Wyman was dating a 13 year old when he was in 50s. Nothing creepy there.
BTW Bassplayer, those are the exact reasons that Pete is probably my favorite songwriter: you can relate to almost anything he has written.

It could also be that what he is saying is that people just want to be entertained by whichever band happens to be on stage at that particular moment. So they do not care what band it is....a concert is a concert is a concert. It's a night out - and a bl**dy expensive one too - now entertain us!

Rock'n'roll used to mean more in peoples lives - a band's audience would follow them like a football-team and not like any other bands.

I guess this problem could be exaggerated at festivals where people walk from concert to concert - and often have to walk midway through to catch another - so music concerts almost become like tv - flip the switch ;-)
