Sorry to sound so negative about the Police. I can't help it...
I think the differnce with the Stones is that (with the exception of a brief period in the 80s) they kept making new music through the years, Neither Mick nor Keith strayed very far musically from the style of the Stones. On the other hand, Sting's recent solo stuff is vastly different from the Police. The personal and musical brevity of the Stones estrangement from one another makes it differet for me. I think.
I believe I once read that Copeland had Sting's picture on his drum heads... so he could bang 'em harder when he played. Anyone else ever heard that?
Well, the purpose of doing something solo should be to do something you could not do within the confines of the band---Keith said that for years. His famous quote about how he could understand it if Mick did a record of Irish folksongs.
The story about the drumheads is true--read that several times.
I know that you're right about an artist expanding his musical horizons...
Personally though, once Sting got to a certain point pop-wise... it makes it hard for me to appreciate him playing the Police's brand of rock-reggae-punk. I'll certainly listen to it with an open mind... but I won't pay a lot to seem them. And their old punk image now seems like it was just a guise.
It's similar for me with Genesis and Phil Collins... I might go to hear Genesis if they had Gabriel though.

It's the same crap that happened when the Stones tickets went on sale at Ticketmaster. It is the promoter controlling the supply to create a frenzy in the market. Most tickets are held back or sold through sports teams season ticket holders, fan club or other pre-sales. When the Police went on sale at 10 AM, nothing came up. It's not possible that they sold out in 10 seconds.
When the Stones supposedly sold out Regina for two shows, two weeks before the show they suddenly released the best seats on the field in the first 25 rows for both shows. You could have gotten row 2 at the catwalk on Keith's side; the tickets sat there for over 3 hours until someone bought them. The first 15 rows were up for 2 weeks and only sold a day or two before the show.
Sell out the Police.... YA right! Keep trying at TM and you will eventually get the show you want.
