Have they ever played this song live?
I could not remember they did.
At least I hope they will play it this summer.

No, they haven't. And they will probably not play it. Although I would like to hear it live.

They did rehearse it in 2003 though, and if I recall correctly they even played it at a soundcheck in Germany.

One of their worst songs ever.

Oh, that's a little harsh, no?

I actually like that song and think it has aged pretty well, a bit different, in a novelty sort of way, kind of humorous in a tongue in cheek sort of way.

I do remember when it came out, my friends who were not hard-core Stones fans wasted NO time in saying to me "That song SUCKS!". The reaction was so intense, almost violent--never could understand it--just a song, afterall.

I'm being violent about it thankfully. smiling smiley
I just hate it. To me it really is one of their worst. "I will be your knoght in shining armor, coming to your emotional rescue". Yuk! And people bitch about the lyrics today...

Kent--lol

It is a matter of taste and this is a song that is clearly not for everyone.

The difference is those lyrics is that it is supposed to be tongue in cheek--sort of laughing at themselves.

Fuc- I like this song..the minute Jagger kicks in with his normal voice...thats timeless..the sax...the sad funny lyrics (end of the seventies blues) girls love it and you can dance to it....but the will not do it..Im afraid....Did they ever did To much Blood live?? Maybe once during Steel Wheels..that would be a good one to..love it!!

For what it's worth- I think ER pisses off a lot of stones fans because there isnt much classic guitar work there. THe only redeming factors are the horns, bass, and clop-clop percussion at the end to sound like horse hoofs.

I like Emotional Rescue, it's a charming pop-like version of Worried About You.

I agree with rooster - it's just a fun, party song. Not meant to be taken seriously. Lots of good memories from the summer of 1980.

Just love the whole album...Remember all that wait when it came out later that announced and a lot of expectation on the airwaves.

It was a number one hit in the USA....wasnt it Elmo?

A big hit, for sure, I don't know if it made Number 1 or not.

It very well may have been. I will say this, when it came out, it got a ton of radio play, you know, back when there was radio.......

"Party song" is a good description and I am with Rooster, I love that whole record.

I also think the perception of ER might have been very different had they toured following it's release. Even in '81, they only did 2 songs, it was like it was already forgotten by the band. Undercover, imo, suffered a similar fate.

Good points, GS.

Also, it was sandwiched between two damn fine albums in Some Girls and Tattoo You. Kinda hard to keep that pace up.

I even think it was No 1 for three weeks..how funny and sad at the same time this tune...disco (read-stones disco!) with lyrics....i also think there is a long version around wich is pretty good....and i also think some die hard fans are afraid to say they like it..and the Stones are afraid to play it ..thinkin people forgot about it....hell it would be a real suprise..and yeah i remember the very long wait foo this mother.

Also..the coverwork is so flat, dark and dull, and really, and it means something even though it sounds stupid..everytime you want to give the album a spin, you see that grumpy cover.
How many people put the Emotional Rescue poster on their wall?

The song was #3 on the singles chart, the album was #1 during 7 straight weeks, a big success.

When Emotional Rescue came out, I sang a variation of "She's So Cold" for the outgoing message on my telephone answering machine:

I'm not home
I'm not home
I'm not at h-h-home
I'm not home

I can't come to the phone
I'm not at home
I'm not home

You can leave your name
You can leave your number
Leave it at the sound of the tone

At the tone
At the tone
Speak into your phone

Wonderful song, patchy album. Can't see them playing this live though. Too divisive.

About the artwork/cover: the poster of thermal imaging was done by a British Photographer/sculptor living in paris who died years ago. I actually lived in his house for 16 months when I was a struggling photographer in Paris- used his darkroom. At the time of ER, thermal imaging was new medical technology and Adzak tried to use it in an "artistic" way. I remember in the Adzak museum there were single photographic prints of the poster hanging on the wall. For anyone interested do a web search ROY ADZAK.

I always thought the cover was kind of cool--it was certainly different.

Actually they have a number of records whose covers, I like far less.

I love the song... very dreamy with the sax.

"You'll be studying history and you'll be down the gym. And I'll be down the pub, probably playing pool and drinking."
