In Ian McLagans well worth reading autobiography "All the Rage" he writes about that Dylan tour. Rather chaotic it seems, with very little rehearsal and preparation. Well, like an ordinary Dylan tour in those days I suppose, but the musicians felt very frustrated according to McLagan. He has far more fonder memories from the touring with the Stones in the early eighties.

Ian McLagans well worth reading autobiography "All the Rage"

This book should be owned by all Stones fans.

The '84 European tour is not a popular one with the Bobcats, but it is a treasure trove for Taylor fans. It is basically Bob fronting an English RnR band. It was an under-rehearsed tour. Early in the tour the band is winging it. The band was sloppy and confused, but got much better as it went along. Bob does not take 7 weeks to rehearse songs he's been playing for years. I think the rehearsal time for this tour was 3 or 4 days. This show is early in the tour. On this tour Taylor's guitar playing ranged from raging (Masters of War) to exquisite (Every Grain of Sand) to simple accompaniment (Just Like A Woman). Carlos opened for Bob and returned to the stage to play electric guitar on the encore songs. It is interesting that people call CYHMK Taylor's Santana knock off. When they are together Carlos' playing is noticeably outclassed by Taylor's. Taylor's playing is rarely "standard" in the way EC plays the blues. But I think he's too subtle for some people. He does not play for the crowd. He plays for himself.

I'm sorry, but ol'Bob is just terrible.I know he's a great song writer, but he has the worst voice I've ever heard.Maybe he should have just wrote songs for other people to sing.MT wasn't anything special either.Jimi Hendrix did far better than Bob and MT on that song.

Saw two of the last 3 shows on this tour (Newcastle and Slane) and from the tapes of the 27 shows (I think I have all but about 2 of them) the band is definitely tighter as the tour progressed. Some of the early shows are exceptional too, however - Brussels for example.

If you're looking for one show to get from this tour though, it's the one from Barcelona on 28th June.

Going by the many clips that have been posted of him playing recently, he is often very standard in his playing. Too subtle? Erm, no!

He sounds really crap in those dylan clips! winking smiley

you have been listening to brian jones, and ron wood and keith richards way to long - yeah I know its all about the bullshit rock and roll life style and how you perform and look on stage and its never about the music that a brillinat guitar player can improvise on live on stage.

long live the vibrato and play that guitar boy.

No I haven't, really! I dont care for the rock and roll lifestyle bullshit! You dont know about my listening tastes or who my favourite guitarists are.

I hear nothing brilliant in any of the clips posted, just a typical blues/rock guitarist, erm, soloist who plays too loud.

usually about a month

Say what you like about an individual clip, Real Live is Mick Taylor in as fine a form as he was on Ya-Ya's. For what its worth I love Keith and Woody's playing and thought Brian Jones had some amazing turns on slide guitar so no, its not all about loving rock 'n' roll posing.

Really? I wonder how much of that was spent actually playing, as the early shows in the tour were often flat, in the band's own opinion, and after '72 they often had difficulty working new songs into the set effectively (apart from '78).

prior to '81 Stones rehearsals tended to be a couple of weeks or so, so by '81 they actually started to get 'professional' and rehearse properly, believe it or not!

Since then theyve generally rehearsed for a month or slightly longer.
