why have many concert movies been sped up?

Why have many concert movies been sped up? For example the Let's Spend The Night Together DVD: the whole movie looks like it has been sped up by 1.4x. All original keys don't match with the keys the songs are played in. Like Jumpin' Jack Flash is usually played in B, but in the movie the key is somewhere between B and C, while the guitarists still play in B (look at the fretboard!). This is the case with almost every song on the DVD. Also many of Mick's dancing movements on the DVD seem too fast to make for a human being. Why has the director sped up the movie? The make it look more flashy/explosive? Or just to be able to put more songs in one hour and a half?

The same is the case with the concert movies 'ELVIS ON TOUR' and 'Ladies And Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones', although in the 4REEL's version of Ladies and Gentlemen, the speed seems to be corrected (but I've downloaded some versions of the movie in which the movie is still sped up!).

Does anybody know more about this?

Speeding music up to give it more "pump" and energy is a fairly standard thing to do in the music bizz. In fact, all music on the radio is sped up about 3%, as it makes the energy level rise AND you can squeeze in some more commercials.

The Stones have used this a fair amount themselves. Several tracks on the IORR album for example (Fingerprint File was recorded in A, not in Bflat), and especially the later releases are sped up. On 40 licks, Tumbling Dice now is in C instead of B, Miss You is in Bminorflat (and several of Wood's licks are missing) and there's more like that.

I Go Wild is slowed down I think.
JJFlash is sped up.

I don't know, LSTNT ALWAYS seemed sped up to me, even in the theater. I have the video, it's not out in the USA on DVD unless you buy an imported version. Hal Ashby, the Director, has been dead for years and years so he has nothing to do with the transfers.... "Ladies and Gentlemen" is ALL bootlegs as it's NEVER been officially released ANYWHERE in any FORMAT.....

BTW, you guys have "perfect pitch" or something? How can you tell what key everything is in?

Yep. Pick up your normal tuned guitar and try playing along to JJF. Impossible.

I don't think JJF is sped up with a real purpose. What happened a lot in the 60's was that tape was transfered from one recording machine to another, and then the mastering took place at again another machine, and the result can be that the tape speed varies. The entire Beggar's B. is running out of pitch, HTW is, and there's more.

JJF studio version is lower/slowed down, about Bb. Same goes for Beggars Banquet, everything is slightly lower than concert pitch, but then again, it's slightly different to JJf.

Strangely, Child of the Moon seems to have escaped this!?

Has JJF been corrected for the 2002 remasters like BB?

That's an interesting question. The Concert for Bangla Desh had been sped up for years, and it was irritating. They finally corrected it a while ago. On the other hand, if you watch the final 1/3 of A Hard Day's Night, where the Beatles play a show in a theater, everything is slowed down. I read somewhere that they cannot correct this for technical reasons, but I didn't understand the explanation.

Nonsens, Miss You is the edited version as it was released on 7" in Am and Tumbling Dice plays in the regular key it was recorded (though it may be a bit sharp).

Wasn't the speed on Beggar's corrected on the last release?

Yes it was, in 84 or thereabouts. Not good quality though.

Don't think about it to much...Film=24 frames per second...Video=25 frames per second (pal system).Someone didn't do his conversion work properly.

Trust me, no need to listen again. I listened and double checked by playing along. On my copy of 40 licks the mentioned songs are defenitely not in the keys you mention. Maybe were listening to different copies?

After seeing some things on the 'making' of a Stones concert video, I find myself wondering: is any of it real? Overdubs, speed and pitch correction...if it isn't live, don't sell it as 'live' or 'in concert'.

I'd rather hear what they REALLY sound like. Maybe why I like the boots and soundboards I have found on IORR better than teh commercial releases - the are real.

you'll never hear what they sound like, other than if you listen to that boot from one of the japanese shows this tour thats all monitor feeds

I always noticed that FF sounds like Mick and the Chipmunks.
