OT?: Albums Meant to be Heard in Their Entirety...

...as opposed to just a collection of songs.

Right now, I'm listening to a prime example of this -- Bruce's "Born to Run", which sad to say, I just recently heard all the way through.

This doesn't necessarily mean "concept" albums, but they do have unifying themes, and make sense when heard as a whole, as opposed to picking out songs at random.

Lou Reed specifically wrote "New York" with this mind.

Brian Wilson's "Smile?" Most definitely.

"Sgt. Pepper"? "Dark Side of the Moon"?

Did the Stones write "Exile" with this in mind?

The full power of Exile is best appriciated when listened to in it's entirety. That's the zenit experience in popular music.

hasn't Mick actually said Exile wasn't meant to be listened to all at once?
the concept being to take it in one side at a time, not all four at one sitting -
ahh yeah, here it is:

>> Well I did like Exile very much. It was like four single-sided albums - hopefully something for everyone.
It wasn't really meant to be played all at once.
- Mick Jagger, 1978 (from [www.timeisonourside.com]) <<

on the other hand: what does he know :E

I agree with that.

Beggars Banquet
Let it Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Ya Yas
Exile--hate to disagree with Mick but this record just flows too well
Some Girls

Jeff Beck--Blow by Blow
Who--Quadrophenia
Miles Davis--Kind of Blue

There are obviously many others, but those jump out to me.

Lol thumbprint. I don't know about EVERY Zep album. But I think Presence is best heard in it's entirety. Just to get that thundering guitar work by Jimmy to rattle your brains.

Unlike the Beatles & Stones & everyone else before them, Zeppelin's currency was albums & not singles. I always thought that a Led Zep greatest hits was an oxymoron.

Every Led Zep album? Disagree. III, maybe. Their entire body of work was resequenced on the box sets by Jimmy Page. He didn't follow a strict chronological sequence on those.

Well, ok, but first consider the following......

Zeppelin hardly ever released singles.
They refuse to go to iTunes because they will not allow for single song sales.
Page is one the greatest producers in RnR history.

I think an argument can be made for every Zep album.

That's true, but what you are leaving out is that he went back nd spent a year remastering the entire catalogue--that, aside fromobvious commercial considerations, was a big reason why he did it. And they needed it, I had the original release of Physical Graffiti and it was possibly the worst (up their with the original cd of Sticky Fingers) sounding cd I ever heard--shockingly bad--they cut off the end of In My Time of Dying..just an absolute abomination.

I have to agree with the original poster re: Born To Run. This was definitely meant to be heard from the harmonica on Thunder Road to wall of sound end of Jungleland. Besides, at 46 minutes or so, it's not really that much of an investment of time.

Ok, folks, I guess I should've specified studio albums. Live albums are a given, aren't they?

You're right--lives albums should be a given.

I would like to add:

U2 Unforgettable Fire
Derek and the Dominos Layla
John Coltrane Blue Train
David Bowie Low

Think Pink Floyd - The Wall and Tommy by the Who are pretty obvious too
