Vinyl records - will I be able to retire on the rare ones?
Posted by: gdgbd ()
Date: February 1, 2007 08:23

Any ideas on how good an investment rare vinyl records are likely to be, in say, 20 years? Is it possible that they will become just old novelties that get pulled out for a laugh?.

My guess is that it will be linked to whether people are still interested in the music on the individual discs then magnified by the rarity (how many were originally pressed). If people are appreciating the Stones in 20-50 years, then my 3D Satanic Majesties record, or Spanish "Fingers in a treacle tin" cover of Sticky Fingers will be Holy Grail stuff.

My punt then is that there will be huge interest in 20-50 years in the magic era of rock vinyl from late 60s to mid 70's, and I can retire to Mars.

I think you already have retired to Mars ;^).

There will always be interest and a collectors market for rare old vinyl.
But unless you have a huge collection of the very best items, I'm not sure it'll be a pension.

Certain rare items are changing hands for silly money...but I think that's because the generation who are currently buying them are the folks who have money and for whom the records also have great nostalgia value...which is often the trigger for their initial urge to collect them.

Maybe I'm wrong. It would be nice if I were ;^)

In stead of investing in "vinyl" - for retirement - I prefere living in a country where the pension is actually a privilege given to everyone at 62, 65 or 67. It's a good idea. Everyone who works pays taxes, and a little bit of the tax goes into a stately run pension fund. And they pay you back when you retire. Tax in not necessarily only a bad thing, you know.
The above mentioned model is known as the Scandinavian Sosial Democracy model. It's very fair.

I say the short answer to his initial question is no. I simply don't see the demand for such items going up that much which keeps the prices down. The internet, e-bay, mp3 sharing, CD burning and the release of previously unavailable music has KILLED the value of vinyl. I should know since I am sitting on a large cache of collectible vinyl I've accumulated over the last 20 or 25 years. The Bitch is trying to cash out. Either you waste incredible man-hours trying to sell the stuff individually or you take the whole lot to a dealer who will give you no more than 1/2 their retail value. I don't know what I'm going to do. I really don't have the time to jack with it and I don't want to give it away either. I think I'll rent a booth at the next record fair in Austin or something.

it depends..

there are few items that i think are worth that much....

and they have to be mint

i am thinking of the sticky fingers promo mono lp....THAT you will always be able to get good money for..

ebay has killed the value of most vinyl... but its also raised the value of the choice items... certain jazz records go for nutso money on ebay right now...

stones is not a good investment general...

you should have collected blue note! then you could retire....i recently heard of a guy from italy- i do not think it was dunhill- who scammed ebayers of 75000 dollars! he had great feedback and listed all these blue note lps....thousand dollar record types.... he provided no pix.. people bought them and paid...he just never mailed records....i guess he cashed out and got his pension

Please, John, can you put a picture of this one?
Prototype Pic Disc of Through the Past, Darkly $10,000+

I saw it on Record Collector around 6 years ago and love to see it in colour.

Perhaps you can put it (the pic) on the collectors side of the vikings forum...

Stones records are increasing in price every year. Check out Record Collectors Rare Record Price Guide. Comes out every two years and is the worlds definitive guide. You will see the increases in the last few years editions. If you collect Stones records then you should have a copy.

That sounds a lot nicer than my current plan - death by 65. Otherwise, I'm screwed.

Hey Stones Relics, How much is that very large poster of Mick on stage at Hyde Park? (he has his lavender tank top and white pants on - it's about 4 ft something high by 3 ft wide) Also the 3D Pop Out Promo of IORR with Mick sticking a pen in his heart (same artist as the cover of IORR Guy P- something - Rockdreams Book. About 3 ft x 3 ft)?

Let me add: Pink 12" MISS YOU, Sealed Spanish STICKY FINGERS, and SEALED Original SOME GIRLS cover - LP of course (pre censorship cover)?

Very common...I have all six cover variations...$10-$20

Satanic Majesties 3D in mint?

Re: Vinyl records - will I be able to retire on the rare ones?

Satanic Majesties:

UK Mono $150
UK Stereo $100
US Mono$ $300
US Stereo $50

but all can go for much more, or much less. Fairly common, but hard to find in Mint condition. Sleeves split, 3-d gets scuffed....

Tralala - You're a hipocrite. Please stop spamming a Rolling Stones board with
messages that do not pertain to the band.
