Before They Make Me Run

BTMMR is my absolute favourite Keef-song,both live and on the Some Girls-album - just a shame that Ronnie doesn´t play the solo on pedal-steel live - and I have noticed that the chords in the solo-part of BTMMR G-D-F-C is the same as the intro to I´m A Soul Man :-)

yes mate, a great song! what still amazes me is keith voice on the studio version, so thin and high-piched, light years away from his 78 us tour broken voice, just a few months later!

Yes but do we know how many takes it took to get the version we know from Some Girls? ;-)

Don't know how many takes, but I'm sure it took a lot of Tic-Tacs. winking smiley

My favourite live version is the one from the New Orleans 1994 show that was broadcast on the radio.

Emotionally, Berlin last year was hard to top as it was the first show I'd seen since Keith's accident and Ronnie's most recent bit of rehab and seeing the two of them ripping their way through it when all logic suggested they shouldnt even be capable of doing so was a wonderful moment

Great tune---to me more of a signature tune than Happy, though Irealze that is the minority point of view.

Is it true they did not play this live in '78 because "Toronto" was still hanging over his head?

dang......didn't know they broadcast a New Orleans '94 show.
Westwood One?

I thought the only US radio brodcast for that tour was the Miami PPV simulcast.

The one on 13 Nervous Breakdowns is a fun listen smiling smiley

IORR............but I like it!

yeah the New Orleans show (from 10th October I believe) was broadcast on FM radio. Its available on numerous bootlegs (minus the band intros as I recall, they must have gone for an ad break or something). Superb show with a nice setlist (Heartbreaker, Its all over Now, Out of Tears etc) and that wonderful version of Before They Make Me Run. Not sure if it was Westwood One, maybe some US fan can answer that one, but I think it was transmitted nationwide.

If I remember right, there were some complaints that maybe the sound quality of the broadcast wasnt as great as it should have been due to bad weather or something, but its still very much worth getting.

The whole show was broadcasted in somewhat muddy quality.
But..14 tracks showed up later...I think it was Westwood One, not sure, and those songs were in terrific quality. It's on the "But Naked" bootleg

How did they make Keith's voice sound like that on the studio version?

don't know much about the New Orleans gig, but i do know this: what a superb song! agree with slide; much more a "keith signature" than Happy . . .

Happy is fast and can be mean, but keith can add so much more feeling to BTMMR. Because of the richer melody, because towards the end, the whole chorus is repeated instead of only one line... Something like that I suppose.

It was great to see it live, twice in three days... In Paris with This Place Is Empty, in Amsterdam with Slipping Away.

BTMMR and Happy are my most facvourite Keith songs! BTMMR fits so well in SG, and contributes to make SG such a great record. And not only the music is great, but also the lyrics are. Keith at his best, i would say...

>> How did they make Keith's voice sound like that on the studio version? <<

what do you mean - that very nasal "high and lonesome" timbre?
it sounds like a lot of his earlier backing vocals - Country Honk, for example, and a lot of Exile,
but indeed not much like his lead vocals from 72 onward. kind of an anachronism -
goes great with slide, though!
