what date would you say the stones started.

ive always thought february 1962, as this is the earliest i can find info on official studio recordings.

is this right or was it another time.

>> why the 12th of july, what happened on this date <<

they played their first gig as The Rollin' Stones, at the Marquee Club.
Bill and Charlie hadn't joined yet, though - the first gig with the full line-up was in january 63.
that february 62 date you've found must be a misprint - i believe their first studio recordings
(outside of home recordings) were in march 63.

they were in the studio recording, as early as february 1962.

so would this not be the start.

no they weren't.
there are some home tapes by Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys from late 61 or early 62,
but those aren't studio recordings, and they aren't the Rolling Stones (or even the Rollin' Stones).

i really recommend these two sites - you'll get a lot out of them, i promise:
[www.nzentgraf.de] and [www.timeisonourside.com]

what are the tracks that your source has misdated as february 62?

No, silly, Brian never placed an ad. Little Boy Blue morphed into the Stones and MJ/KR recruited Brian to be the band's official tambourine player.

the first demos the band ever cut were in October 1962

The band got together to fill Blues Incorporated's weekly residency at the Marquee on 12th July because Blues Inc were unavailable that night as they had a radio date with the BBC. Jagger was one of the band's three vocalists but the BBC wouldnt pay for 3 singers so he had to miss the radio recording. It was agreed he would instead fill the Marquee residency with the Stones, so he put a band together of a few of the guys he was playing with.

>> Little Boy Blue <<

right, Neptune - it's absolutely true that Keith and Mick were in that fairly informal Dartford band
before they met Brian. glad you're around to remind us. :E

as for how they all got together ... the story is so familiar,
but i wonder how much agreement there is about the chronology.
Nico's site has april 7th (1962) as the date that Keith and Mick went to the Ealing Club and met Brian,
who was playing a guest spot with Blues Inc; he's got may 25th as the first time those three plus Stu
got together for a rehearsal at the Bricklayers' Arms. so if that's right, it seems like Brian's famous advert
probably appeared in late april or may.

the way i know the familiar story, Stu answered that advert, and had a couple of rehearsals with Brian
and a few assorted others before Keith and Mick turned up on may 25th.
so did Keith and Mick respond to the advert too, or did they come along to the Bricklayers' Arms
because they'd gotten to know Brian at the Ealing Club?

in any case: Charlie was playing regularly with Blues Inc at that point (so was Mick, starting late may);
Bill was with the Cliftons, who were part of a different scene. had Stu also been playing with other bands?

This quote from Keith says it all(before the bouts of revionism set in):

"Brain could have easily joined another band, but he wanted to form his own. The Rollin' Stones were Brian's baby!"

But really, I dont think the full truth can be known, they were too busy getting on with it to be taking notes.

Na, ya got it wrong, babe. Me and Mick saw Brian for the first time at the Ealing Club, and we were blown away by his tambourine playing. We looked at eachother and we said, "Yeah, that's what we need!" Me and Mick approached Brian later and asked him what his technique was and how he got that splendid sound, and he said something about practicing in front of the mirror a lot and using his wrists a certain way. I was just blown away! I'd never seen a tambourine player like that and I asked him right then and there if he'd like to join our band and he said yes. There was never no ad, that's rubbish. Brian joined our band, end of story. Brian was a funny character, he was caught up too much with being a pop star. I think the beginning of the end for him was when he lost interest in the tambourine.

sure, but obviously there are some extant records of some events,
and people in the same milieu plainly have enough recollections
to piece together a general chronology: Nico got the dates on his site from somewhere.
and surely someone somewhere knows what Stu was up to before may 1962.

Yes, but the variations in the story make it near impossible to know which 'slant' is the right one. The general tales dont seem to make much sense if you bring them all together.

Just my thoughts. smiling smiley

Thanks for the links. The two sites are awesome. For the first time I saw what I paid for a ticket to their Ottawa concert in April 24/65....$3 bucks!!

Neptune
What do you mean Brian never placed ad?
There are several sources that confirmed the placing of that ad.

Brian was the inventor and inspiration of the Rolling Stones. The band would not have existed without him. He never received that proper credit during his life...

Yep, there's even a picture of it in Wyman's book Rolling with the Stones.

I just looked in Bill's book Rolling with the Stones
Brian's ad was dated 2 May 1962.

I'd propose this as the date of the Start of the Stones.

Loud73, would he let you post it? That would be nice to see as most of us have seen the "known" pictures. Thanks!

That Jan (14th?) when Bill joined' em is a mark day as well.
But that 1962-date is of course the actual starting date.
Which means they're turning 45 this summer...
