"Winter " - once & for all..?

Season and song, nota bene! smiling smiley

Since we're debatin' Goats here, and I feel
it's shapin'up its reputation...

And since we're finally getting a real winter here at about 64 degrees latitude
in Mid-Sweden... A good half meter of (mainly) fresh powder snow,
kids are shinin' their slalom skis, winter sports are everywhere
& we're all warppin'our couts around each other...

What's the story behind this wonderful song? All Jagger, or... ?

People who talk about climate crisis and no winter have a short memory. Believe me. I live in a part of Norway where we have snow records. Just 15 minutes from sea level walking but still 4 feet of snow in one week 2-3 years ago (record for that year and not unusual in my area, if you don't count the mountains, where they have 10-15 feet). Sure the CO2 is a big problem, but there will be lots of winter and lots of snow many places still. I am talking by experience. I have to get rid of all this snow, every time it is coming down, and I would not mind having "Italian" climate really.

In Denmark we've had no snow at all yet, and I think we went under 0 degrees celsius one or two times for a single day only. I love it. Hate snow. It fills up the streets and is just in the way of everyone. Snow should learn to stay where it looks beautiful like in New Zealand, Norway, The Faroe Islands and the like.

And the song... ? winking smiley

BTW I dont buy this doomsday-prophecies either;
it aint much warmer now (the 90s and 00s) than in the 1920s-30s
or around 1900... Possibly we have a warmth progression comparable
to those at viking age or post-ice age.
Anyway; December was horrible with rain etc & now I
enjhoy the real winter... Suspect I will get weary before April or so...

And now over - to "Winter"... ? smiling smiley

-Recorded without Keith...Jagger sings here like a man cast adrift, yearning wistfully for a failed romance:''it sure been a cold, cold winter, and the light of love is all burned out''.
Its a rare moment of vulnerability from the singer, and its played out against an epic soundscape of strings and guitar. Taylor s rich leadwork flows in and out of a lush bed of strings arranged by nicky Harrison. As with ''Angie'',The song stood in 1973 as a monument to the stones abilyti to craft a tender ballad, even as the band s overall sound and purpose seemed to unravel. Andy Johns today calls the song''one of the best things they ever did''.
Apart from the song s musical value,Winter also demonstrated a human side of Johns rock and roll paymasters,in spite of their well-deserved reputation for bitchiness.Shortley, before traveling with the stones to Jamaica, johns was producing an album with Jack Bruce, with whom john shared an apartment in NY park avenue. After a night of debauchery, johns awoke to find one of his arms numb, and the feeling wasnt comming back. Johns told Jagger about his arm, and offered to bail out of the ''goats head soup sessions,''Thats bullshit''Jagger told him.''Your comming.Look, its all in your head anyway.I bet you get better soon.A few days into the sessions, and just as they were finishing'''Winter''the feeling in the arm returned. pffff hard work for a Rooster...cheers Baboon!

Jimmy Miller was not tottaly happy with the finished vocals he wanted something a little more powerfull but mick, having laid down three or four takes, was called away from the studio by bianca and the magic take was never made mick staylor s unnerving lead guitar helps to make this one of the most powerfull tracks.

Here in old Holland we have storms and the flowers come out.

Weather: The annual winterstorm around Jan 15-20 in Western Europe
seems to be stronger than usual; but I reckon some here
still remember the severe winterstorm of 1990.

The Track Winter: - Is there anymore outtake of Winter than the one which was
posted at Trade not too long ago?

Winter is a great, great track. One of my favorites. And if you have experienced a real winter, I think you love it even more.

If you do have Winter then then I think it is easier to love places like California. And I think people in California go to the mountains for snow... Does not make sense for me of course.

25 degrees F with 5-6 inches of fluffy white snow falling right now (1pm 1/21).

not a big fan of winter..the season. I've always loved the song.

As a Californian with a vacation house in the mountains,it doesn't make sense to me either bv. But that's where the ski resorts are and people go to the mountains and act like they have never seen snow before. Like it's some great miracle. Us Californians are pretty spoiled when it comes to weather. Anytime it gets below 70 degrees fahrenheit,we complain how cold it is and if it goes above 80 we complain how hot it is.lol

Now as for the song Winter. Just an absolute gem. I didn't know keith didn't paly on it. That's probably one reason they don't do it live.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

The song Winter is OK. Not the best though. There's lots of other stuff on Goat's Head Soup that's better. 100 Years ago, Dancing With Mr. D, Heartbreaker, Angie, Silvertrain and Star Star I all prefer to it. Still it's quite a good one.

Winter is grossly overrated and a filler song. The song drags on too long, Taylor's solos are buried in the mix, and Mick goes way overboard and over-the-top with that ridiculous vocal.

The version Taylor did with Carla Olsen was good too, despite it being 12 minutes though it seemed as if Taylor could play his guitar forever on that track.

The GHS version is great as-well, the way Jagger sings those last lines just warms your heart.

On another GHS note: You gotta love the version of 100 Years Ago from 1973. It's really good. Same with Silvertrain (Found on Definitive Brussels Affair). Shame about the quality though.

Yeah, and little duckies are already popping up on the canal banks, (size of a large snowflake)... up till today temperatures have not dropped below 8-10 degrees (C). But they will drop somewhere today to 5, and then to 2/3, -2/-3 at night. With soiltemperature of at least +5, it will be a muddy gray/brown very dangerous couple of days, after the snow starts falling...

It's all El Nino's fault. Maybe they can build a fence around the ocean to keep him out.

Here in Buffalo, we have had our fair share of blizzards and heavy snowfalls. No snow for the month of December and warm. But the last week or so its been back to winter and cold temps.

The song "Winter" is a very good one. But is seems that every time I play it the weather turns bad.
