Re: Down the road apiece

True that it's not a Chuck Berry original, but the Stones learned it from a Chuck record. The same could be said for Route 66, another non-Berry original that they learned from one of his albums.

I suppose my vote would have to go to "Let it Rock" (Brown Sugar B-side/Get your Leeds Lungs Out) and the '72 Bye Bye Johnny. Some pretty cool stuff on Beat Beat Beat at the Beeb too.

So, of the officially released Berry numbers.. is this list complete:

(1) Come On (single A-side) 1963
(2) Bye Bye Johnny (first EP) 1964
(3) Route 66 (first album) 1964
(4) Carol (ibid) 1964
(5) Around And Around (5x5 EP)1964
(6) You Can't Catch Me (no 2 LP) 1965
(7) Down The Road Apiece (ibid) 1965
(8) Route 66 (live) (Got Live EP) 1965
(9) Talkin' Bout You (Out Of Our Heads LP) 1965
(10) Carol (live) (Ya-Ya's Out LP) 1970
(11) Little Queenie (live) (ibid) 1970
(12) Let It Rock (live) (maxi single) 1971
(13) Don't You Lie To me (Metamorphosis LP) 1975
(14) Around And Around (live) (Love You Live LP) 1977

I included (3/8) and (7) even though those are not written by Berry, but The Stones have picked them from his records, and do them with his style. Do I miss something?

So, over-all The Stones have released officially 9 different songs written by Berry + 2 'almost' Berry songs. Three of them we have both studio and live versions. Plus we have a live version of "Bye Bye Johnny" in officially released L&G film... and maybe some others in their official 'recent' live DVD's (Four Flicks?); I am not sure, but I can't recall any.

Now, if anyone could make similar list for non-official recordings...

Exactly! That I have forgotten from my 'definitive list'! "Don't Lie To Me" is released officially in Metamorphosisis album, (even though originally credited to Jagger-Richard, I think).

One one thing about those released berrys.. they have chosen by true fans with a good taste. They have left the most obvious ones away, like "Johnnny B. Goode", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Memphis Tennessee", "Rock and Roll Music", "Reelin' and Rockin', etc (even though they were sometimes belonged to their set lists in the early days, and later.)

In fact, some of the songs are nowadays well-known thanks for The Stones making them 'big' - such as "Around and Around".

The 1972 live version is by far the best.

Ditto. As a teen in the seventies I discovered the early Stones albums because of that track.

My'favorites' are Oh Carol from Ya-Yas. Let it Rock from Leeds and Around and Around from El MaCombo. As to which is the best it would be refreshing to have at least one of these "best of" threads state what the criteria are for making the selcection.

BBJ '72...without a doubt. The guitar interplay has a sophistication CBerry could only dream about. Keith begins the song, but that tasty early riff is all Taylor before he turns the lead back to Keith. The Vancouver performance is unique in that Taylor plays the lead all the way through. MSG 7/26 is the quintessential performance, but they are all good.

Carol '69 would be my second. I listen to that tour when I want to remind myself what classic Stones and classic Keith sounded like. Inglewood, 2nd and one of the Boston shows come to mind as a particularly strong performance by Keith. Again, the tempo of those '69 songs (JJF, MR) is delicious.

I was very impressed with Around and Around on LYL until someone said it was overdubbed. If that is true...well...no wonder.

Isn't Down Home Girl a Berry song, too? Don't have access to my CD's right now so I can't double check.

For me, it's the song "Little Queenie".
Although, I like the 1999-"Rout 66"-number, LQ is a burning song!
They played it really well on Bridges To Babylon-tour but the 1969-version is hell! Boahhhhhhhhh, love it!

Talking About You
Down the Road Apiece
Let It Rock
Around and Around
Little Queenie
Carol

In no particular order.
