"Gomper"

Well, I know a lot of people hate it or find it self indulgent. "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" is mostly self indulgent. "Gomper" is a killer droning Moroccon/psych jamboree, and playing it from the 2002 Satanic is pretty revelatory thanks to the remastering...Loud and powerful, the sitar/guitar/keyboards/tabla/flute segment truly hypnotic...makes me wish I had some hallucinogens.

A piece worthy of the song! Thanks as always Rockman.

There is no sitar on Gomper, or the Satanic Matesties album for that matter. I think that may be Brian's electric dulcimer.

The flute is actually a recorder.

Brian used sitar in such inventive ways I'm not sure I can tell, but it's always listed...And the density of the mix - especially right channel, with the (sounds like a) flute (& tabla) ringing with aggressive clarity in the left...Nevertheless, a highlight of TSMR for me (showing Brian's Moroccon visits had their influence on at least a handful of tracks, We Love You being another obvious one) along with Citadel, (which fades too soon), 2000 Man & Light Years...The Lantern quite lovely too, especially Keith's guitars.

Paint it' Black and Street Fighting Man are the only two officially released stones tracks with Brian playing sitar on them.

People hate it because it doesn't sound like the Rolling Stones. Whatever. I also love the song. That sounds much more like a sitar than a dulcimer. The dulcimer doesn't have that twangy sound. Brian Jones pretty much plays all the instruments in this track except for the electric guitar, which is played by Keith. How Brian doesn't get any songwriting credit is beyond me.

It's not a sitar, trust me.

Also, it sounds like 'someone' is playing an instrument with a slide, it could be the electric dulcimer, a 12 string, or maybe even the Vox mando-guitar.

It's not NEARLY as bad as Back to Zero.

Its a cousin to I Am Waiting I always thought. Not musically educated enough to describe what I mean intelligently, but there seems to be a similarity to my ears.

Just play G. loud on reasonably good speakers or headphones. It rocks.

Who does the odd vocal towards the end? Kind of an orgasmic yelping? Doesn't sound like Jagger.

I like to think it's Brian when he puts down his flute, but that's wishful thinking - cant say it recalls the voice on 'Walking the Dog' or anything...

It's a nice little song.

It's one of my faves, love the whimsy in it and showcases Brian's genius. Clever and sensual lyrics too!

I listened to TSMR yesterday actually and I like it. Except a few tracks, like Sing this all together. But Gomper is not too bad, especially the first part. It does for sure showcase Brian's musical abilities. As for the album, I agree with my good "old" Dad, who bought it in 67 with the 3D, is always saying that TSMR is an underrated album. "Just listen carefully to all the sounds", like he once said to me.

Citadel! What a great song. Too short though. 2000 Light Years, 2000 Man, Rainbow...goody!

Literally 965 kilometers from being "Born in an Arctic zone".

problem with the album is that they went too far with all the psychedelic stuff...they should re-do it all as a rock album.

Great idea, Luke! Not even me rank Majesties as a fav album!
