OT: The Hollies

Anyone else here like them? I recently bought their 2-CD Best Of and absolutely love it. It was great single after great single for them in their 60's heyday. I saw them live a few years back and despite no Alan Clarke and of course Graham Nash, they were excellent. They were certainly one of the best harmony driven beat groups of the era.

Saw an interview with them several years ago and they mentioned their song Carrie Anne was written about Marianne Faithful. Never knew that.

Graham Nash was on a programe last night about the the 60's and 70's music scene in California and seemed to talk down his time with The Hollies a bit. Its a shame because its all a lot like him for. I have nothing against CSN&Y, but I know I'd much rather listen to the likes of Just One Look, Bus Stop and Sorry Suzanne anytime.

i saw them on their first trip to america in nyc 1965...they were really loud; the harmonies were beautiful...they opened with "rockin' robin' and did the holy hell out of it...they were awesome, infectious...real loud rock with great singing all around...duly impressed the crowd. they were nowhere as manicured as their records...they were tough rough and ready live band, probably not that far away from punching it out on the bar circuit with the rest of the second tier brit invasion bands...their singles were incandescent...good band.

I'm so glad that some of you guys dig them. They were a truly wonderful group in my opinion. Okay, so they were never as big or as good as perhaps The Beatles or the Stones, but they were very solid in their own right and after a couple of years, they started coming into their own as songwriters too. They really were a cut above the rest of the British Invasion rabble.

Bus Stop was I believe their biggest early success in the States. Its one of the most perfect pop records of 1966.

I completely agree.

I don't know why Nash doesn't respect his own work with the Hollies. Personally, I think it is infinitely superior to the CSNY stuff, which I always found to be rather bland.

Good posts, y'all. I really like The Hollies (took their name from Buddy Holly, BTW). "Long Cool Woman" reminds many of CCR.

Yes the Hollies certainly made a mark during the British Invasion. I recently just acquired 2 concerts of the Hollies in ex sound.

The Hollies had a bunch of good singles, they were especially good singers.
Some people say John Lennon stoled their song Stewball when he made Happy X-mas (war is over). And you can't deny the songs are pretty similar.

yeh thommie, cool song; familiar melody; that ol' song is a way old traditional folk melody, but they did a great job with their variation on it, and so did john...& tho i wouldn't have thought of it, now that u mention it, i do hear the melodic similiarty you're noting...anyway, it's origins by way of hollies:

The Hollies
Stewball
(Traditional, arr. the Greenbriar Boys - Bob Yellinm, Ralph Rinzler & John Herald)
Track 10 on album 'Would You Believe' June 1966

{guitar intro}

Old Stewball was a racehorse,
and I wished he were mine.
He never drank water,
he always drank wine.

His bridle was silver,
and his mane it was gold,
but worth of his saddle
has never been told....

The Hollies were a band I really enjoyed in the 60s and then almost completely forgot about until I bought a 2-CD Greatest Hits a few months ago. Apart from a very ill-advised cover of "Blowing In The Wind" I don't think there was anything on the album I didn't enjoy, and I spent a happy hour or two going "Oh yes, I'd forgotten this one..." and then finding I remembered all its lyrics all the way from 1965. A great singles band that I was very happy to rediscover.

As late as the early-mid 1970's the Hollies were playing at Winterland in SF. When Bill Graham would announce coming attractions at OTHER groups'shows, and he would inform that the Hollies were coming later that year or next, a big roar always followed, whether it was a Steve Miller, Frank Zappa or other type of crowd.

A prime reason for Nash leaving was because he felt it was a case of one step forward and then two steps back concering their writing. They wrote most of their own material in '67, but then decided to release an LP of Dylan covers. I can understand his frustration there perhaps.

Is ther a DVD of them in concert with Alan Clarke I have been looking never found
anything All I can see is a prity poor one with 3 or 4 hits promos
Its hard to beleive that a band that has toured all those years has no live DVDs

Mind you The Stones dont release anything from th 60s Even stuff we really want
Like The London Palladium & The Poll Winners show
