Stones on Ed Sullivan - #1 Overlooked Hits? #2 Micks Vocals in '69?
Posted by: HelterSkelter ()

Having a DVD Boot of all the Stones performances on Ed Sullivan I was thinking what '60's hits/near hits did they avoid playing on Ed's shows? (hits only please, not something like "FLIGHT 505" or whatever).... I came up with MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER, JUMPIN' JACK FLASH, and UNDER MY THUMB. ALSO, what was with Mick's VERY low vocal mix on the 3 song 1969 show? (GIMME SHELTER/LOVE IN VAIN/HONKY TONK WOMAN). Was it a bad sound engineer or censorship done on purpose?

This is what the reporter asks about during the press conference scene in GIMME SHELTER. Mick's mike was deliberately muffled so that Honky Tonk Women and Gimme Shelter's mention of the word rape would get by American network censors.

No way! Nothing could mess up the ending when Ed and Mick couldn't be any more awkward around one another. Ed sounds like he's hitting on Mick after he asks where they go from there (Madison Square Garden) and he tells him he'll see him backstage in his dressing room and Mick's fey "bye-bye" to the camera as if their audience was still 12 year olds is priceless. Search for Honky Tonk Women or Gimme Shelter on youtube if you want better Let It Bleed era UK TV appearances.

the Sullivan sound thing i've always wondered about is Keith's guitar on Satisfaction -
i remember being stunned by its near-absence when that was aired in 66. how did that happen -
an early case of recognizing that you can censor the vocals all you want and the Rolling Stones are still raunchy as sin?

on the october 66 show just after thanking Mick Ed says something like "next week: Herman's Hermits"
and Mick has to do an abrupt about-face to avoid guffawing straight into the camera. :E

From 64-65, they were actually live. After that, Mick was the only one actually performing (karaoke Jagger)! Kinda like the Don Kirshner clips, I guess.

Keith's vocals as well

Yeah, GIMME SHELTER has a nasty edit in it due to avoiding the Jagger/Mary Clayton (?) Duet section. MAYBE they should have gone TOTALLY live on GS I think (or do YCAGWYW)

Sullivan and Jagger ARE very akward when they have to speak to each other at the end, that's true.... Ed looks a bit like an a much older slicked back hair TURNER from the Film PERFORMANCE so maybe there was some weird voodoo going on.....

The '64, '65, and '66 performances were live and kicked ass. My favorite was their appearance in '65 with Brian playing the slide on Little Red Rooster which was awe-inspriring.

thanks Neptune - i reckon february 66 was still full-on performance, right?
and october 66 was the first playback + vocals set: Paint It Black, Lady Jane and Have You Seen Your Mother Baby

but to return to one of the original questions in the thread, i don't know if "avoid" is the right word,
but Not Fade Away, It's All Over Now, Heart of Stone and Play With Fire also come to mind ...
oh and Get Off of My Cloud, of course.
and 2000 Light Years.
sorry, i'll stop now. :E

yep.
Little Richard was at the rehearsal for that, and he spoke these immortal words:
"that Keith Richards sure is a funky-lookin cat!" :E

I'm pretty sure they did Play With Fire on Ed, where they're sitting around on some goofy set. Or is that As Tears Go By?

well ... the Twins did As Tears Go By on Sullivan by themselves with pre-recorded strings,
but there wasn't anything particularly goofy about the set. you're probably thinking
of that Play With Fire where they're all slouching on a Rolls Royce looking menacing and sullen,
but that wasn't Ed Sullivan.

Are you sure those strings are pre-recorded? That'd be hard to pull off!

I think there was a small pit band at Ed Sullivan.

... why would that be harder than any other playback scenario?
i think what you're calling a "small pit band" was actually Topo Gigio, another of that night's guests. :E

It would be hard to do because Mick and Keith are playing live, in order for the strings to come in at the right time, they would have to have had some kind of click track or musical cues so they were in time with the upcomings strings on tape.

The other songs were totally live for that particular show, so why not As Tears Go By?

sheer idle speculation, but since the Sullivan show didn't have any "house band" that i recall,
it seems like it might in fact be a lot easier to have the strings on tape than to hire a string quartet,
rehearse them, pay them, etc. they did plenty of playback + vocals in those days and they managed to coordinate it all right, so ... ?
but i'm merely speculating, not arguing. you could ask Nico how he knows they were playback strings.

No arguments here, just curious. smiling smiley

The difference with vocal only playbacks is that the backing track starts first, in this case, for As Tears Go By, Mick and Keith are playing on their own live then the strings come in.

Ah, maybe Keith's guitar isn't actually live, but pre-recorded as well. It sounds very different to any of the studio versions though.

I haven't actually seen it, just have it on cd.

picturing ALO crouching behind them with the taped version to keep them in synch with the upcoming strings ...
i don't know, and therefore shift the subject somewhat: they certainly were good at miming, when they wanted to be -
the Sullivan Show somehow never seemed to inspire them to try very hard, though!

editing to your edit: yeah, i see what you mean about the guitar possibly being playback as well,
and would have to study the DVD a while to decide what (if anything) i think about it.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

Mick: I'll satisfy your every need...
Keith: Don't let me down!

Hilarious!

okay i watched As Tears Go By a couple of times and ... i don't know -
it sure looks like Keith's playin that guitar on the spot, but then: it's supposed to look like that, isn't it.
at the start he and Mick are both paying pretty intense attention to something over on their left,
so maybe they were being cued visually? or ... since you can hear "ghost/guide vocals"
on the Gimmie Shelter playback tape maybe they used something like that on this tape too, to keep it all in synch?
anyway it's fun pondering it - i'd never considered what a feat of Playback Finesse & Suavity that was,
if those were indeed pre-recorded strings (which i still think they were). so ... thanks, HM!

Well, his guitar is a six string onscreen, and the sound is a 12 string.

Nah, it's just a slightly out of tune 6 stringer.

Can anyone post the clip over at the trade/buy forum? winking smiley

I wonder if they didn't go over in 1968 due to Brian being busted? It seems strange that they didn't promote JJF on the show, did they air the promo video?

smile: yikes, the JJF promo on Ed Sullivan? heavens no! did they have it on that London Palladium show?
i think that was a similar ilk of program to Sullivan: sincerely square sunday-evening "family entertainment"
that isn't normally meant to render all the grown-ups speechless with outrage. :E
