Like anyone cares about an Ozzy-less Sabbath!

The members of Public Enemy are very upset about all this positive attention being given to the Police, although they have been smoking blunts all day and don't realize we are talking about the musical group.

"Dre, what's all this shit about the Police?"

"Looks like it's time to break out our most famous song - 1,2,3 ... @#$%& Tha Police!"

Well I see The Police is one of those bands that most people on here like to rag on. I wasn't all that crazy about them when they first started and I grant you Sting is a tool. Plus they made a couple of the most amazingly annoying songs ever. Roxanne,I can still hear Eddie Murphy singing it in 48 Hrs.,and the da doo doo song. Message in a bottle is not much better. But if you dig into their catalog they really did some very good stuff as well. The song Invisble Sun is their best imo. The album synchronisity is also very good. I havge never seen them live. I am not sure I would see them live on a reunion tour. In fact I heard Andy Sommers on a local radio station a couple months ago promoting his book and he mentioned the many millions they had been offered for a Police reunion and basicly said that it was because of Sing they did not do it. I guess their is only so much tabtric sex you can have before you that itch for the road again.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

At first I thought this was from the Stones' "Cherry Oh Baby"

Ozzy is expected for a new album after the tour with Dio.

Sting's talent can't be discussed.

I can just fancy someone from my band that shows up one day proposing an "idea" like, say, roxanne, one of the best songs ever!

Great singer, performer, good guitarist, powerfull bassist (with some great choices of lines).

Sting solo had some great moments (the dream of the blue turtles era was great - esp. the tour. among other I can remember being impressed by the bassist, our beloved Mr. Darryl Jones! - there is a great double live album) - his version of shadows in the rain alone is worth the price of the disc -

That was before he slipped into mtv pop. Always very well crafted and performed (truly high class pop) but also boring as hell-

Funny but true - don't forget "Teee-oohhh" and "Cha" as other well-worn Police lyrics.

De de de de, De da da da = Do do do do do do (Heartbreaker)?
Roxanne = Rocks Off?
Every Breath You Take = Almost Hear You Sigh?
So Lonely = Lonely At The Top?
I Can't Stand Losing You = I Can't Get No Satisfaction?
Be My Girl = Wanna Hold You?

I think the Police were good in their early period with their reggae influenced sound but i began to like them less and less as they became more polished. Sting's solo career seems a natural extention to what the Police were doing just before they split up. Their earlier sound was much more interesting, however. Maybe the increasing dominance of Sting is the reason an album like Syncronicity holds for me so little appeal.

Unfortunately Sting these days bores me to tears.

That's exactly how I see it. I actually like Sting's first solo album (and also the live double album), but I liked it a little less than the later Police albums which I liked a little less than the earlier ones. Sting slowly faded away from my interest and attention. Nowadays I don't even care if he releases something, and if he does and I am coincidentally hear it on the radio, it bores the shit out of me.

Sting eventually joined the school of thought that hacks like Desmond Childs belong to, where the verses are almosr secondary - just timefiller for words that no one really listens to. Where it's all down to the catchphrase chorus that needs a humalong, memorable melody and some kind of lyrical hook. These malodies end up sounding totslly forced. "But if I ever loooo-ose my faith in youuu.." or "and if I build this fortress around your heart.." blah blah

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

He's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing - The former Keith Richards?

lol, funny post and great pic of public enemy. slight comment about the origins of that song if i may; Public Enemy did indeed cut that track (as a cover song) but orignally "f*ck the police" is from the N.W.A. multi-platinum debut, 'straight outta compton,' ('88) which is one of the very few rap albums i've spent a lot of time with...(and felt satisfied and transported by.)

as far as stink, well he's mostly worn out all welcomes in my punkinhaid a long long time ago; he's a committed activist, certainly a good player blah blah blah...the world loves him...he writes a lot of transformative stuff that i can't seem to connect with for some reason...

i don't much like listening to his voice outside of a few selected tracks somehow...and he's spent so much time in (for me) uninteresting jazzbo stuff and godawful middle of the road movie ballads that i just can't go there...

i do find copeland just a mind blowing original talent on drums and percussion tho. absolutely.
he synthesizes a lot of different influences into his style and still keeps it really solid and original, his energy is really infectious and his execution really spirited and brilliant...

it will be interesting to see the bass/drums interplay when they start up again...i would imagine only for a summer tour, or is there to be a new product they're promoting?
i guess stewart copeland is really the only one there i find truly fascinating as a musician. i'd even be interested in his soundtrack stuff.

i am not a police fan, tho i surely wouldn't deny they have some excellent tracks...and i like andy...haha...i guess my problem is stink...

when they were breaking big i was listening to cheap trick and aerosmith and the ramones, starz, los pistolas, springsteen coming on very very strong at the time... and a zillion others, more that kind of thing...most of my friends were blown away by their first album and it certainly had impact...i just never cared much somehow. dunno why.

when the three of them got together they made some pretty cool music. I was just listening to "Driven to Tears" on the radio earlier. they definetley developed their own sound.

Yes, exactly. Say what you want about them, but they were one of those bands that developed their own unique sound.

FYI, I read on the internets that the rumoured headlines for Bonnaroo this summer are The Police, Dylan, Petty, and Pearl Jam.
