SF 72 Question
Posted by: ChelseaDrugstore ()

On harold Colson's great site there is a photo from the first SF gig. In it Jagger already has his first shirt off; so it is a ways into the show. Keith and Taylor both are playing Les Pauls. Keith is capoed in 4th fret. What song could they be playing?

In '72, Keith used a capo at the 4th fret for "Happy", "Tumbling Dice", "Rip This Joint", "Jumping Jack Flash", and "Street Fighting Man" (hope I'm not missing anything). "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was played with a capo on the 5th fret. Although Fender Strats and Teles have often been Keith's favorite guitars for 5 string open G tuning, I have seen pics and some footage of Keith using Les Paul's in open G.

BTW Keith played different guitars on the Aussie Tour, and correct me if I'f I'm wrong, M Taylor played a telecastor in PERTH !!

I think ChelseaDrugstore explained what pic it was......of course I guess you wouldn't know unless you were familiar with Colson's site. I looked at the pic.....it's hard to see the capo on Keith's guitar and I would have missed it if it hadn't already been mentioned. I don't know what song they're playing though......it looks like its' probably in the 2nd half of the concert. I think they're playing "You Can't Always Get What You Want" in the 1st pic where Jagger still has the polka dotted shirt on. They could be playing "Happy" in the first pic because it's hard to tell from that view if the guitar is fretted at the 4th or 5th fret and you can't see Keith's pinky finger to tell if he's got a slide on it or not. After looking at it again though, I'm pretty sure there's no slide there.

isn't that one of the shows where Keith used an LP for Happy?
maybe someone would post the photo here ... i'll make popcorn.

edit: oh sorry - you said second part of the show ...
but if he was using an LP on Happy would that not imply that he ... oh forget it,
i just woke up. but i'll make popcorn anyway.

Streets of Love? - oh, but that's in the first part of the show....

long live the 1972 (over-rated) tour ..(sigh)

So we still can't figure out what song it is. YCAGWYW makes sense as far as guitars go for 1st part of tour but the Capo doesn't. Also if it is LP it is most likely standard tuning for Keith. Did Keith play Strat on Rocks Off?
It is the capo on 4thfret combined with the LP that makes no sense.
BTW Thanks Erik for posting the pic. You are clever.

I just checked and saw that they played "Loving Cup" in SF. What about that one? By process of elimination...

I thought about that too....are there no eye-witnesses with a good memory?

that looks like a rambler or Ycagwyw pose to me. but I mean, how can you really tell just from looking at mick.

Re: SF 72 Question

But it's not just by looking at Mick. Jagger has his jacket off and the belt too. So you know it is later in the set and probably not Rambler. Keith is playing Les Paul, which denotes standard tuning, BUT is capoes at 4th fret which is odd.

got you, Im just talking about myself. To me it just looks like rambler, but Im just going by the pose, I cant tell by looking at the fret and stuff.

as I said, they were getting ready for the Euro '73 Tour....,I'm surprised some people think this is the "pinnacle' of the Stones live stuff...in fact Brussels/London/Peth/Sydney are all better than any US 1972 show IMO...give me a recording to disagree ?!

Re: SF 72 Question

Chelsea, I just realized, they didn't play Loving Cup at first Winterland show.
Well, it's possible that they did, 'cos the recording is incomplete,
but at least they didn't play it during the 1st half of the show, which is where Loving Cup was played, usually.

'72 was a far better tour than the '73 European one - why? Songs. Too many GHS spoiled the soup in '73.

ha ha...

1972 was boring and built-up by most of the stuff you read. Listen to the bootlegs...quiet boring IMO.
Give me an example as to why the MSG 1972 shows were as good or any better than the Perth/Sydney shows....or London 73 shows for that matter ?

This is absurd by the highest degree.

sorry, I should not have canned a US show...

Re: SF 72 Question

yes Erik, I know. When I found "Loving Cup" played it was only for sure in Gig 4 (I think). I was really only assuming that they would have done it on Day 1 too. And yes LC would have been early on.
I am thinking that in the earlier stages of the tour Keith still chnaged thing sup more. Still trying to settle into a rhythm. Eg I notice that he evebn changed his clothes more early on. Latter gigs are all the same outfit. But anyway, maybe he was still experimenting with different guitars or tunings. What about All down the Line"?

Well, the Aussie '73 tour was essentially an extension of the US tour. I'm talking Europe. And, again, the playing was fine and dandy in Europe, but the inclusion of so many weaker GHS tunes at the expense of some of the core '72 songs is what makes '72 clearly better. I listen to all the '72 shows I have (not just the boards) as a matter of routine - never tire of them.

yes of course it was an extension to your tour....

I don't think Keith playing a Les Paul neccesarily constitutes standard tuning.......if you'll remember, he used a Les Paul on "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Street Fighting Man" in the Gimme Shelter movie and I've seen pics of him playing a Les Paul capoed at the 4th fret on the '72 tour as well. I think he played Les Paul's in open G quite alot before settling in on strats and teles.

Second pic is after MR. Mick took the belt off after that number. In fact, it could be the end of MR, 'coz Mick used the microphone in his hand.

But...didn't they sweep the stage in bright lights, the last minute of Midnight Rambler? Of course it could be between the unstrapping of the belt and the last minute of that number.
BTW, didn't Keith use that red shirt in US 1969? Not an essential question...

Re: SF 72 Question

but on MR Keith would have the capo at the 7th fret.
[peering hard:] i can't see his capo in that shot, but if Chelsea et al say it's at the 4th fret i believe them.

and yeah, Erik: Keith had that red star shirt in 69 as well.
