Got a few bootlegs of this MJ tour and it is no wonder why Mick troubled Keith (while he was working on TALK IS CHEAP) to put THE ROLLING STONES back together after this tour. What an overload of EGO's!!!
Very good lesson in it that the best INDIVIDUALS (Satriani, Ripp, Whimbish, Simon Phillips) on any instrument can't put a BAND together.
It's just speeded up all the time and doesn't swing, roll or rock. WHAT AN EMPTINESS!!!

I saw two of these shows. Excellent musicians. The show was a bit sterile though.

Have seen videos. Lousy playing and a very REDNECK haircut courtesy of Mr. Jagger.

Actually, the playing was excellent. Ripp (the Keith Richards clone) had the riffs down pat. Satriani was outstanding, particularly on the MJ solo songs. The drummer was a bit over the top in my opinion. An excellent band all in all just lacked the X factor.

To me these Jagger solo tour do not even enter into the realm of consideration. Just flat out no room for that crap. Satriani playing Stones songs??? drum solos? It is everything Keith AND MICK have worked their entire career to deny. That kind of overblown theatric.I am convinced that deep down Jagger knew all along that this was not the way to go. he got too greedy for solo superstardom. To the point of prostituting his music.
There is more of the Stones spirit in a Charlie's Tentet e.g than that clinical crap from the 80's.

As Keith said "what makes you so greedy, makes you so seedy ... you don't move me anymore."

Honestly, Joe Satriani was fine. He kept his playing controlled and didn't go into guitar pyrotechnics. I would have preferred Jeff beck though. It was supposed to be Jeff Beck for this tour but (in Jeff Beck's words) 'the old man (Jagger) was too much of a tight arse' to pay Beck's asking price.

From what I've read, a tight ass/cheap ass competition among Jagger, Beck and Jimmy Page would finish in a dead heat, then they'd all argue about whose turn it was to buy drinks afterwards.

Legend has it Page once gave a single bottle of whiskey to his roadcrew of 30-plus in Zep's multi-million dollar heyday, earning him the nickname of "Led Wallet." Similarly, Jagger's unauthorized bio by Christopher Andersen tells the story of him taking a cab in NY in the '70s; the fare was $2.50, he gave the driver $3.00 and asked for a quarter back.

"overblown theatric"??? I guess that's what we see in Stones stadium shows...!
No, really, it was not that bad. If you listen to Little Red Rooster from the club gig now that is as down'n'dirty as even the Stones don't manage to perform nowadays. The drummer was a bit over the top. I never liked Simon Phillips' style. Always a bit too much, always fills and stops where they are not needed - too much ego to just lay a solid rhythm down... My general impression was that for a 'solo' tour, it had too many Stones songs. Then again, many arrangements re-surfaced in later Stones tours...Sympathy For The Devil, Ruby Tuesday and so on.

Agree. Phillips also blew on the Who's '89 comeback tour, but then again so did the whole tour since they had a million backing musicians and most of the lead guitar wasn't even played by Townshend.

I DID. Tokyo Dome; HOT SHOW! Tina turner guested; And,They were great together!
SEE: [thestudio.main.jp] (CONCERT DIARY) for other related gigs

Mick had every right to go out on his own and see how he'd stand up sans other Stones; He did well.

Of course it was his right, and it can be argued if he hadn't done it the Stones would have never gotten back together, so it's valuable in that sense if no other.

I went and saw Jagger's shows because it honestly it looked like the Stones wouldn't tour again. Also, Satriani was THE hot guitarist at that time. Foxy Lady was a stand out and a surprise. The Stones covers were good. Wild Colonial Boy was silly. This is a traditional Australian folk song about an Australian bushranger (outlaw). Jagger did this song in his show because he sang this in the debacle of a film Ned Kelly. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

In these shows, Jagger would walk into the audience during Gimme Shelter. This was a big mistake in Tokyo. If you ever see the video, you see where the over excited Japanese audience just about pull him apart.

terraplane:

I played six soundboard discs of Jagger's Australia rehearsals [Brother of Sodom, EV] and nowhere did I hear a riff that remotely sounded like Keith Richards. Jagger's shows had some great Stones selections, but it wasn't the same. Stones songs he did were:

Honkey Tonk Women, Ruby Tuesday, One Hit (to the body), Beast of Burden, Brown Sugar, It's Only Rock and Roll, Jumping Jack Flash, Rip This Joint, Miss You, Tumbling Dice, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Bitch, Gimme Shelter, Start Me Up, and Satisfaction.

At a gig in New York, he did three Stones songs as an encore: Live With Me, Rip This Joint, and Have You Seen Your Mother Baby (standing in the shadow). These were cool performances, but definitely lacking the KR sound.

I will say that in some cases they really nailed the studio sound on the openings. Examples are Honkey Tonk Women and Brown Sugar. The intros sound very close to the actual studio releases, but nothing like Keith's live intros.

This confuses me. As the guitarist was playing the same guitar parts as the original songs, how could they not sound like Keith Richards who played those original parts?

because he ain't Keith, Terraplane.

It wasn't a Stones show so I wasn't expecting him to be Keith though he sure looked quite a bit like him.

yeah - and it would probably still be either Paul McCartney or Rod 'Tight as two coats of paint' Stewart's turn....

The clip of Mick doing that crap song in 25X5 is simply laughable. I get the feeling that I want to punch him in the face when he does that glad rock 'n roll gum chewer pose.

I was 17 years old and saw it from the second row of the Sydney Entertainment Centre. At the time, Mick and Keith weren't talking and so I thought Mick solo was the best I was ever going to get......since then I've seen the Stones 24 times - 12 times in Australia, 6 times in the US, once in Canada, once in Belgium, once in France, twice in Glasgow, and three times in London.

Mick solo was great - Mick was fantastic (I agree about the dreadful haircut, but it was great to see him with his long flowing scarves that were reminiscent of 1969 and 1972. The back-up band were tight, but soul-less. I was not a fan of Joe Satriani's style f palying, or his attitude. I also did not like Jimmy Rip - he was blatantly a Keith rip=off, and it just looked ridiculous. But, it was a great set-list, of about 30 songs, and I think in many ways that Aussie tour in '88 paved the way for the Steel Wheels tour. I'm glad I saw it. I can't beleive it was over 18 years ago (half my life-time!!!). I really hope they tour in 2007 and beyond.....we'll see.....
