bob has plenty to say. i'm not following that argument of yours at all. so he's recasted a couple of blues standards - he's done that his whole career. but the lyrics are all Bob....and, I've read where he's said he doesn't like the studio - that's got nothing to do with my point - which is that he follows his muse and when he's got something to "say" - he says it.

Thats basically what he alluded to in his autobiography, since he got that 'awakening' in 1987 where he finally saw his 'mission in life' so to speak

i don't think it matters much what songs

Oh, hes plenty to say when he feels the need...he's just more selective than he used to be, However Bob has never felt comfortable in recording studios. In the first 20 years of his career, he spent a total of some three months of his career in the studio. An incredible figure when you look at the body of work he created over those two decades.

right, gazza....which basically underscores my point - being uncomfortable in the studio isn't the same thing as having "nothing to say."

i didn't say he's uncomfortable in the studio and only that...but the fact he hates going into the studio and loves playing live tells you something about what he's into.. its playing live.. he does not play live to support albums... he plays live cause its what he wants to do and ocassionally , when he has to and when he's got a few songs, he goes into the studio and cuts a record so that he's in the paper etc.. i'm not going to repeat the whole spiel.. he cuts albums to support his addiction/need to play live.... he comes by dc at least twice a year.. he's ocasionally got to mix it up, get in the paper etc or the demand just isn't there to see him live...he ain't the rollign stones (thank god for it)..

dylan is on record as saying that songs no longer come to him like they did... and looking at his recorded output of original songs since 1990 or so we get a grand total of about 40 songs..... in 1967 alone he must have cut twice that number.. he's got very little left to say.

40 songs since 1990 works out to about two songs a year (expect no new dylan album til at least 2010)..

does not mean i don't like the new album... i do... but lets call a spade a spade...

also although dylan has always recast songs i don't think we can say that the type of recasting he's been doing on love and theft and modern times is the same as say on blonde on blonde... BOB's songs are far more original than the ones on modern times... to say he's been recasting songs his whole life is rather reductionist... whats been recast on blood on the tracks???? it just ain't the same type of writing..

again for the record: love dylan..love the new stuff...

ciao

i'm not sure if we're just in violent agreement or what. i'm saying that bob doesn't write new material just to justify his constant touring (which is something you basically said that he does do earlier in the thread) - he does it because he has something to say. and that's WHY he doesn't record that often - he lets his muse determine the pace.....

well it would be boring to be in agreement all the time.

Almost as many Tods as there are Lips. Now that I notice it. Too many Sweets and 2 Edith Grove's. Man I have spent way too much time on this board the last few days.
