What happened mixing Love You Live?

A friend told me he heard an interview, where Mick & Keith claimed mixing & editing Love You Live, especially the El Mocombo set was a horrible experience. Is that true?

well, Keith being under arrest and facing a 7-year-to-life sentence probably didn't add a lot to the fun -
but maybe your friend meant the 1977 Old Grey Whistle Test interview with Mick, Ronnie and Charlie.
Mick talks about not liking the way concerts are recorded, and how he feels it should be done differently.

The first time I heard this album was on cassette when I was 10 years old. I remember listening to Star Star and being irritated by noises I kept hearing in the background. Like someone singing with echo, but not being upfront in the mix. I always thought it was someone singing backing vocals poorly. Came to find out it was the overdub which was upfront, and the echo I was hearing was the original vocals... Still irritates me every time I hear it.

ohhh Beely - LYL is vital! the El Mocambo tracks, first of all: that there is the roll, baby!
then there's those splendid renditions of Happy and Tumbling Dice - ohh and that hot hot hot SFTD -
ahem, i mean: yeah, please do dust LYL off and give it another try, Beely - it's worth it!

You are 'spot on', Beely Boy.

It's a badun.

It deserves dust....... and ashes.

Interesting to hear about Mott and Bowie in Philly.... are these official releases?

sympathy for the devil is the highlight for me.

Didn't Keith Harwood, the engineer, die in a car crash during the mixing of the record?

IMHO, although the el mocambo stuff is wonderful, SFTD is the real highlight of LYL... and it knocks the stuffing out of the studio version.

Agreed.

The only song that ever I ever really liked on that album was "Crackin' Up." Nice guitar interplay on that one.

Most of the stuff on that album is flat and tired sounding.

The whole double-live album thing became a ritual in the mid-70's. It really only worked for acts that were up-and-comers at the time: Kiss Alive, Seger's Live Bullet, Frampton Comes Alive.

I got LYL right after it came out (on 8 Track!). El Mocambo is great SFTD is also greta. I like it just about as much as YA YAs. Some the other stuff on it is hit & miss. I just don't care for much of the song selection and presentation of it from 75/76.

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

BTW, I Loved it, & got it on Vinyl when it came out,
I love Ronnies smokin guitar, He's playing fast & together.
The El Mocombo side is really classic, you really get a feel for the ribbing they give each other during the introductions.
Which is why stories of rough mixing sessions kind of suprised me.
You know those buggers have alot of fun too.

I have the anniversary of MTH's live album and it is great! One disc is NY (Radio City I believe) and the other the Hammersmith Odeon. Like the vinyl, but with additional tracks. (The record company would not approve release of a double live album at the time.)

Bowie's album was released in July 1974 or thereabouts (don't have access to it right now). It's a very important album to me as well.... While I wasn't at that show, my very first concert was one of the September dates of Diamond Dogs tour in L.A.

I loved Love You Live when I got it, now, later on, I see that 75 is a much better tour than 76....yet I still enjoy Love You Live.

Tired, uninspired, jaded, cynical, boring, throwaway ... Love You Live set the template for all Stones live albums bar Stripped. Stick to 75-76 tour boots instead.

The only song from LYL that does anything for me is the inspired version of "Happy" -- "yeah, heah". Great slide work by Ronnie.

Have to disagree mate. In the context of when they released it.
From the clever cover, The new material, plus Crackin' Up, Mannish Boy
Ol' Bums Rush Jagger. Double Lp.
We had very few current boots in circulation then, and if you got into it then, you probably still like it.

What else could they really have done to please you man?
I love it... Live.

Hi, I'm new here. My second post. Been lurking at work every day for two years! God bless all you Stones fans.

So far as mixing "Love You Live", you can put lipstick on a pig and a wig on top of that and it's still a pig.

It might very well be the one truly tragic happenstance of the Rolling Stones' career: the missed official opportunities to document the band at their peak combined with the too-often weak live product released in its stead. If you dig it, God love you, but hey, for LYL to be the only representation most folks know about middle-period live Stones is just telling people almost a lie. Yes, the really WERE the greatest rock and roll band in the world, three years before this and two years after, but right then, in Europe in '76, they were great only because even bad Stones is better than most things in life.

I came to it via vinyl later in life, just a few years ago actually, and just never found much reason to play it, not even the much-vaunted El Macombo side. You can just hear what the drugs and the whole experience of being the Stones had done to them by this point, not just to Keith but to all of them, there's just this "been there/done that" malaise all over their vibe then.

And I often have thought on all three of the arena sides, Ronnie sounds like he's still learning the stuff, and probably was, or at least trying to, having Keith as his leader and the leader not at his best. Pity that record buyers have to contend with that and have no idea that "Brussels Affair" or "Handsome Girls" even exist.

I loved it for a long time but then when i started to get into boots from the 75/76 tours i realized they were nuts for releasing it.Still enjoy it but it's too polished while all boots from the period show them as they were, which was raw and edgy.

I think you're right - 1975 was so much better. But lately I was listening to the original Fingerprint File and IORR from Toronto 75 (without the editing and without overdubs) and just fur the fun of it to the raw live-version of Sympathy from LA and I wonder what they've done to those songs. In my opinion the released versions aren't nearly half as good as the originals and so even the benefit of having 3 songs from 1975 on LYL is worth nothing in the end.

Sympathy from New York is as interesting as the LA recording because of the two basses played by Bill & Keith, guitar by EC and the heavy percussion by the steel band. It is a pity that no complete soundboard exists from these shows.

And they still did a great Midnight rambler. Even other songs like Gimme shelter or Heartbreaker come to mind.

I agree that LOVE YOU LIVE is really a very weak live album. The overdubs could not save anything. Why does Jagger always feel that overdubbed studio vocals are better than his live singing?

Oh yes, I second that. I can't tell how much I love the 75-versions of Gimme Shelter and Heartbreaker. El Mocambo or not - I'd prefer "Charlie Watts & His Fabolous Rolling Stones" to "Love You Live" anytime. 6 songs only but what a killer-LP including all 3 songs you've mentioned above.

I really like it-apart from Fingerprint File-waste of time!

Especially like the ending to Star Star

As I see them, live albums should work as a tour post card.

They are addressed to the casual fan.

With that in mind, LYL is a great album. Yes, it is edited, the performances may not be the best available, etc. but the set is great, there is lots of meat, it gives you an "idea" of what it should have been. The idea of the mocambo side was absolutely great.

Having said that, I think that even the die-hard fan has plenty of gems to dig out of it. JJF alone is worth the price of the album. The guitar work on that (mainly Ronnies) is absolutely unsurpassed.

Not all the edits are bad either: SFTD without the plink plonk is a bomb!

Beelyboy, have you checked out the classic photo of Marc Bolan (taken by Ringo Starr) on the cover of T.Rex's Slider album from 1972. Wonder if Slash took his visual inspiration from here.
