I am probably awfully late, but Derek Trucks might just be the best thing since Mick Taylor, Duane Allman, Harvey Mandell and the heroin years of Eric Clapton. This guy is truly amazing.
best guitarist on the planet Earth at the moment - and I've been on record with that opinion for about 3 years now....first heard him play in '94 and was simply astonished what an accomplished musician he was already at the tender age of 14. His wife ain't half bad, neither!
from what I've seen until now, he's the new Duane Allman. He's the new Mick Taylor. Unbelievable. It's not even his total control of the slide, but it's his melodic sense. That's unique. He's lik Clapton in '71 -every solo is an unique story, a total trip to something unique.
Let's hope he doesn't have a motor cycle drivers liscense.
Well, coming from a HUGE Duane fan - I hesitate to say this - but I think he out-Duanes Duane. I've seen him with the ABB play so ferociously well that his guitar-mate, Warren Haynes (not shabby himself), stops what he's doing and just drops his jaw in amazement.
Er... new Duane Allman. Okay, I've seen him, and yes.
New Mick Taylor, well doesn't the previous comparison make that comparison redundant? I mean, Mick Taylor was NO Duane Allman. Calling him the new Mick Taylor dones't give him enough credit!

Well, both Taylor and Allman had this "beyond technique" playing. They weren't technical wonders, but both enough technique to express all their melodic feelings. Copying both players is not the problem, but inventing something so wonderfull and unique as they did in their prime is where the true genius is. And this is what struck me with Derek Trucks -he has this melodic Taylor/Clapton/Allman excitement I haven't heard in years.
I've sometimes thought that Eric needed to get back on smack. As to Derek, he is an extraordinary player and as to the Allman Brothers have anyone of you checked out the "Eat a Peach" deluxe edition that has a live performance from the Fillmore East dated June 1971? To my ears it is a far superior performance than the "Live At The Fillmore East" release recorded a few months earlier. Yow!

doesn't write a whole lot - a few tunes on his solo albums.....doesn't need to write...has impeccable taste in covers and is really more of a jazz artist...with jazz it's not about writing original material, it's about putting your own signature on the tunes and improvisation, etc....
Derek is finishing up a commitment with Clapton in Australia/January, and some early spring USA dates.
After March 18 Derek leaves EC's band to rejoin the Allman Brothers for their annual run of shows at the Beacon Theater in NYC.
If you have a chance I would highly recommend seeing him with EC and/or the ABB Beacon shows. The ABB's Beacon shows are always great with lot's of guests showing up for an added element of surprise.

He's also managed to squeeze in some dates with his own band during breaks in the EC tour....
If you want to discover good guitartists go see Eric Clapton on tour. A couple of years ago I saw Doyle Bramhall with him. Last tour it was both Doyle and Derek trucks. Amazing guitar trade offs all evening. Although Clapton is one of the finest guitarists around, he is not afraid to share the stage with other great guitarists. And in the process introducing these guys to a wider audience.
In the mean time enjoy Willy Weeks and Steve Jordan (Xpensive Wino) on bass and drums.
Here the line up of his european tour: 1 June 2006 17th Show '06 / '07 Tour Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
The Band: Eric Clapton - guitar, vocals Doyle Bramhall II - guitar Derek Trucks - guitar Chris Stainton - keyboards Tim Carmon - keyboards Willie Weeks - bass Steve Jordan - drums The Kick Horns (Simon Clarke, Roddy Lorimer, Tim Sanders) Michelle John - backing vocals Sharon White - backing vocals

i don't hear alot of similarity in playing styles between DT and MT - but there is a certain similar "aura" and "stage personality" (or lack thereof?). I mean they both have these angelic faces (talkin' early MT here for purposes of this discussion) and they deliver some of the most surreal sounds from their axes with nary a wince of emotion emanating from them.

Oh, my, this is so weird. I saw Derek Trucks' WV tax return today. It showed his reported income to IRS. I can't reveal that, for obvious reasons, but he and his wife Teresa are doing well. Smart rock n rollers invest -- that's all I can say.

Steve Jordan is simply a Beast on a drum kit! Just powers thru live sets.
Derek besides being a great guitar player seems to be a down to earth nice guy. I met him 2 years ago backstage at the Beacon. Derek was also coming outside the RAH (stage door entrance) this Spring before the EC shows and was interacting with fans.
