my favourite unknown band was a band called June (1992-1997, chapel hill, NC). they were one of the most original bands i have ever heard, crafting mysterious and artsy romantic odd-metered songs. incredible. they got to release a debut on Beggars Banquet label, then folded. nothing from them on youtube or anything, but there is another new band using that name now.

My favourite unknown band....I don't know that bands name, or where they come from, in fact nobody has ever seen them....why are they hiding?

they are hiding simply to remain your favorite unknown band. a tough career choice, but they seem determined.

Geraldine Fibbers.

Don't ask questions; just go out and buy one of their two albums. The first is "Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home" and the followup is "Butch." After these albums, the band splintered in different ways. The bass player shows up in a lot of L.A.-area band performances. Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline formed Scarnella, and then Carla has a number of other post-Fibbers projects, all worth checking out. And Nels Cline was pegged to tour with Wilco after Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and now seems to be a full-fledged Wilco member.

I have a good friend who reveres the Fibbers more than I do. He "owns" them, so to speak, but I can spread the word.

And to link this with a thread I started yesterday, the Fibbers performed at Tower Records in West Hollywood at midnight on the day that "Butch" was released. June 30, 1997, I believe it was. After the performance, I bought their album and "OK Computer," also released that day/night.

Of which today Dag Vag, Omega, Solaris
are alive & kickin'... Kebnekajse alive &
Röde Mor maybe even kickin'...
Kampec have never been better & Holm is actually not a group,
but can be seen & heard every 10th year or so.
His first albums (Sordin 1972, Lagt Kort Ligger 74 & Veckans
Affärer 76/77) is a kick in the ass no matter yer language.

There is a band from Athens ,Ga called The Whigs that are phenomenal. I don't know about "unknown". I think more people should know them, yes. Same goes for the banbd called The Music out of either Sheffiled or Newcastle I think. Now they are fairly "big" in a small way. I just think they should be humongous.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

The Cactus Pricks

This is a funny story. My brother directed a musical about the life of Patsy Cline. He lives in Victoria Canada, not a hot bed of country musicians. He convinces a bunch of country hating jazz musicians to set their prides aside and do the show. They agree and being jazz musicians actually in very short order become this increadibly tight country band.

Once the show is over the boys have the itch to keep it going so on a lark they pile in a van and head for Nashville. They enter one bar with a demo and are hired on the spot. By word of mouth alone they work steady for over a year.

When I think of all the history of well meaning foks with a passion for the genre that waist thir lives trying to break into the bizz and a bunch of country hating jazz musicians from Canada can make a living walking in the door I have to chuckle. They still play the odd gig up here.
