The new Live at the Fillmore 1970 release with Crazy Horse is superb! (unless you already have the superior/longer bootleg of this concert). The guitar interplay between Neil and Danny Whitten is killer! I cant wait for more from Neil's archives.

Reactor is a great Neil album - t-bone is the highlight...especially the lyrics. classic.

I bought the cassette years ago. Played once. It's collecting dust as we speak.

it's much better on disc, james. you should get it - the dust that it will collect will be much better, too.

Nope..it was Neil and the Shocking Pinks

The Blue Notes was his late 80's 10-piece band which had a 5-man horn section and released the "This Note's for You"

Thanks Gazza....I knew Elmo was wrong but I just couldn't tell him to his face.

Tried to tell y'all that I was a Neil novice. But I know my Stones, like that great live album Sticky Fingers, you know the one with "Start Me Up" and "Midnight Rambler".

I'm kinda turned off Neil in a way though, StonesTodd.

I think "Miss You" is on there, too.

Avoid Decade.

Go for Unplugged and Weld.

Essential Neil for newbies:

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
After the Goldrush
Harvest
Rust Never Sleeps
Live Rust
Freedom
Harvest Moon

You can't go too wrong filling in the gaps within that parameter.

I'm in the third category. I've hated his last three albums, excepot for one song (Bandit). And now he's releasing a solo version of Living With Anal Warts.

I haven't really dug anything since Harvest Moon, actually.

i would go with

decade

and mystery train which is a better compliation of the geffen years than lucky thirteen.

Why does this remind me of something Mick Jagger would come out with at a concert?

tell me more, james. when did this turn off begin and what would it take to find the 'on' switch?

I'd probably weigh in with the consensus on Neil. I think Decade still stands the test of time. Even missing a few later classics. That and Live Rust and you will get a very good sense of what Neil Young is about.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

Decade and Greatest Hits are a good start. I also agree with the recommendation of Rust Never Sleeps. Also might want to try ARC!

Nice list:

I'd add:

Zuma
Ragged Glory
Sleeps with Angels

Re: OT: Neil Young

I'd add:

Time Fades Away
On the Beach
Tonight's the Night
American Stars and Bars
Comes A Time
Mirror Ball
Living With War

Well,Ragged Glory is one of my top recordings ever, so I've gotta raise it (not a compilation of course, but it's classic Crazy Horse). The tracks from this on Weld are knockouts too.

And what, no Greendale mention yet? Don't the FBI shoot Sun Green's pussycat or something.

His last consistently good album.

Trans is a great album. I wish Geffen had been a lot more open-minded with him and basically let him follow his madcap muse wherever it took him, because he wouldn't have produced dreck like Everybody's Rockin' ...

ok....since the subject has got away from the original 'recommend a greatest hits album' subject, if you want a top 6 :

Tonights The Night
Ragged Glory
Rust Never Sleeps
Zuma
On The Beach
After The Goldrush

throw in the 'Live Rust' and 'Weld' live albums

Oh God, Alright!

On The Beach
Rust Never Sleeps
Tonight's The Night
Harvest Moon
After The Goldrush

I think that On the Beach (side 2) may turn off newbies.
Though 'See the Sky...' is one of my favourite songs.

I would stay away from "Sleeps With Angels". That album made me stay away from Neil for a while.

FormerlyKnownAsFAH, I agree %100.

Having nearly everything prior, I borrowed that and Mirrorball from my sister-in-law. I returned them the next day.

In fact, I haven't bothered with anything past Unplugged. The only exception is 'Year of the Horse' - another HUGE disappointment! I saw the tour and loved it, but the versions of songs on the CD sounded nothing like what I saw. I mean, why change the key of a song mid-tour - and released the lowered-key version? Bleah!

I would highly recommend another listen. Duplicating (capturing on tape) what Crazy Horse does live is almost impossible. "Change your Mind" , in my opinion, is about as close as you can get.

I'll gladly send you a factory copy if you would like to try again.
