U2 are a fantastic band and an incredible live act, but totally different from the Stones. It would be impossible to compare the two.

Unlike the Stones however, they are not afraid to play the new stuff.

Sheesh.....To rock and roll at some point you have to swing and U2 can't. It is that simple. Midnight Rambler at Dodger Stadium a while back swung like Tarzan though the trees. There is nothing in U2's arsenal that makes me want to to do the Philly Freeze or the Boston Monkey. Dig their politics but I can't dance to it. Besides, you don't have play 2 and half hours to get your point across, I saw Rev. Al Green play a show in '76 and it was 26 minutes long, he was the headliner and it was HOT HOT HOT. No matter Prince on a good night can take care of U2 and the Stones with a borrowed band. That being said the Stones will always be my boys. It's too late to stop now. I have found what I was looking for and it's the Stones.

I have seen U2 3 times and every time was almost reduced to tears with boredom. I will NEVER understand their immense popularity! Bono is the worst frontman I've ever seen. I'd rather watch Michael Stipe than him. And for God's sake...is he ever going to give up those ridiculous sunglasses and those phony, overly dramatic operatic gestures? And the rest of the band is always so serious and dour...hardly a smile cracked...and that is, of course, because their songs are so "serious," "important" and "spiritual." Gimme a break.

The New York Dolls should be as popular as U2...they're the REAL second greatest rock'n roll band in the world...and THE greatest some nights.

What a mixed-up, crazy, upside-down world we live in!

Here are some local Honolulu newspaper reviews that corroborate
the incredible gathering with U2 experienced by all in attendance.
I love many bands music...I urge all to be open-minded and experience somehting different than your ordinary routine...
oh...HEY! Bono's shades are super cool...Mick and Keef have cool shades too!

I would have loved to have been there, but I already enjoyed my Thanksgiving Hawaii vacation (even w/o the Stones). Pearl Jam and U2 under the stars at Aloha Stadium sounds like a great evening.

One thing I can say about Bono -- he's been sneaking too many ice cream cones. The guy is fat -- he reminds me a lot of Robin Williams. On the other hand, I must admit that he sang his fat ass off when I saw him in Saitama two weeks ago.

Man, that's funny. lol My wife mentioned to me she thought he looks like Robin WIlliams too... Unbelievable performance though... probably as close the Stones profound magical era of '69-'73 as any other band could get...perhaps even more transcendental? Very moving...

NumberOneStonesFan says: U2 are zen-like demigods

I respect everyones right to like and respect an artist. However U2?
I think this thread may actually be a joke, "U2 are zen-like demigods",
gimme a break. U2 are average at best. Here in Ireland they are'nt
anybodys favourite band. They are respected for their status, but every
one knows Bono is a c**t. I met him in the Point Theatre years ago when
I was about 15 and I was head and shoulders over him. He does not have
the makings of a demi-god by any strech of the imagination!

Re setlist changes, U2 did 6 consecutive shows without changing a song or even order they play it. I am referring to the Vertigo tour, European leg. I wanted to see 2 show but I wasn't able to get tickets for both. Believe me, when I found this I was glad that I didn't make it. Just for a comparison - 2 consecutive shows on Licks tour ment 6 different songs each night.
I would be more interested in Pearl Jam, they are terrific!

I like some songs from U2 and to say the truth I get excited when I see them performing live. But not because of the U2 but because of the energy that the crowd gives through the concert.Bono is not even close to a good front man and U2 make huge use of effects and stuff to make the sound you are referring(at least that's what I have seen in this forum in the past about edge).I don't like their personalities not their looks just some of their songs.U2 and Stones are different because in a concert with u2 you get the energy from the crowd while in a Stones concert you take the whole energy from the band.

Where was I in 91-93, saving up my dough for Voodoo Lounge. I do no on e thing, Bono could never have sung "For Your Precious Love". The Jag is a Soul Man.

Nice Review. But as for U2 running the rock scene in future decades remain to be seen. Anyway, it could be worse.

Sorry, jjagger, but I think they're much better than average. Unique sound. But they don't merit comparison to the Stones.

Elmo..thats the point, U2 plays a unique sound which covers the lack of good songs.

Man...Honolulu is still buzzin' from the show...they had a very profound effect on the population here... those who didn't attend now wish they did.
The stadium has cracks in the foundation because U2 rocked it so hard...

That's funny. I like U2's music a lot. But I have been listening to XM 44 "Fred" a lot lately which plays a lot of early 80's New Wave and Postpunk stuff including U2 and it really isn't any better than a lot of the bands that didn't come close to reaching the same heights. Personally I try not to follow band's offstage antics too closely but with Bono it's really hard to ignore and that has had an impact on how I might enjoy the music or possibly enjoy the shows (haven't been since 1992 but that one was incredible).

I saw them on the Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop tours. I thought they were superb. I love those albums and thought they justified their existence and deserved their status then - even if it lost them their "Joshua Tree" fans. Trouble is everything they've done since has been a deliberate retread of their mullet years, which I hated. With a passion.

A few weeks ago you were telling us it was due to the earthquake

I sense a bit of revisionism at work here! winking smiley

What makes U2 so different from Eighties bands Big Country and The Call? Nothing, except that they're still around (and they still sound very dated).

The Rolling Stones music, for the most part, is timeless--except for 'Dirty Work'...produced by a U2 producer...and some of 'Steel Wheels'--whereas U2's music definitely sounds of its time, the 80's and 90's.

Consider this rumor, which was published about two weeks ago in Rolling Stone (Oh, it's GOTTA be true!) Bono can write the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin!

(with apologies to FZ)

The stadium survived the earthquake ok...no structural damage from that...but the joint was Rockin' last Saturday night!

Vertigo is a modern sounding song...I will follow sounds early 80's new wave, no doubt... I think every song sounds reminiscent to the year or era it was created.

Bono maybe able to write the Lords Prayer on the head of a pin, but can anyone read it?

They played for 300,000 people in Ireland the last year!
Their greatest hits album is still #1 there after 3 weeks (while ABB was out of the top 100 after 3 weeks)
Give me a break, they're more important now than 10 or 20 years ago.

They are more influental than 10 or 20 years ago but they appear very humble at the same time... They are happy just to share their gift of music and message with the world. Peace.

And here it is a video from the São Paulo show that was broadcasted. It was te first time Bono did it and it's one of my personal favorite live versions of The Fly:

Even your statement refers to Ireland, only, i think you're wrong. Atleast when you are saying "...than 20 years ago". Are they more important now than in the years of "The Joshua Tree" (1987) and "Achtung Baby" (1991), which IMO, was the last great U2 album? If you count the quality of the albums ,OK, it's a matter of taste, my opinion is different than yours. But if you count album sales, don't forget that "The Joshua Tree" has sold atleast 18 million copies and "Achtung Baby" 15 millon. How different the situation in Ireland could be?
