How do the members of the Stones get paid?
Posted by: The Sicilian ()
Date: December 5, 2006 15:18

Are guys like Bobby Keyes, Chuck Leavell, Ron Wood etc... paid a weekly salary, only during a tour, what about during recording sessions, rehearsals, and between tours? Does Mick and Keith get a set percentage of ticket sales, souvenirs, tee-shirt sales, record sales?

Anyone have a clue how it works?

Ronnie's been a fully fledged member of the band for some time now ...no longer a hired gun.

Indeed. Don't know exact figures but I've been told that as a Stones backing musician you make enough bread on a tour that under normal circumstances you don't need to work for 3 or 4 years.

I wonder if anyone (other than stage hands etc...) gets paid hourly

Heard that Ronnie was paid $250,000 to "guest" on the 1975 tour. Figure in inflation and go from there.

Don't know about weekly, monthly, etc. but I'm pretty sure they're paid to the advantage tax-wise per Prince Rupert.

the rolling stones are a corporation.. a big business and the 4 members, mick, keith, watts and wood are paid in a split....now mick and keith get more ...plus get royalties for the songs they wrote.
no one knows the split....but the 4 get a share of everything! shirts, tickets, programs, etc....

the backing band members are hired on union scale....some more then others...
i'm sure b. keys and good old chuck are paid much more...

Bill and Charlie pushed for Ronnie to become a full member and get an equal split. They split the touring money equally, though as stated above, MJ and KR get the songwriting royalties.

Mick And Keith only get more money from songwriting credits. All the rest is split four ways.

I'm also curious what the back ups earn but i don't think anybody knows.
I read in Mac's book that for the '78 and '81 tour they (Prince Rupert) asked him what kind of salary he had in mind and then they worked from there and settled somewhere where everybody was happy.

Cheers,

Bill and Charlie pushed for Ronnie for years to become a member and Mick and Keith wouldn't cut him in as a member...after Bill left they finally made Ronnie an official member with a percentage...basically after Bill left...it was a no brainer...they gave Bill's share to Ronnie.

To quote Ronnie..."I waited 17 years to join the club and it's a nice club to belong to"...something like that.

Also, in Wyman's book...he says they gave Wood $500,000.00 to do the U.S. leg of the Tattoo You Tour.

I heard that they get paid in Tesco reward points + as much Shepherds Pies as Keith can eat.

hot stuff, I think now that Cohl guarantees the band a certain amount and he gets the money from the gate, t-shirts, merchandise, etc..

He takes the risk, but reaps the reward.

Not sure how it works for it works for the Stones but usually hired hands get paid either per gig or per week, since often promo appearances etc are made in addition to the usual live concert appearances. For a little insight on how this works, Andy Gibb wrote a great book called "Neighborhood Threat" about his tour with Iggy Pop in 1988. In addition to salaries, musicians and crew are often paid a daily or weekly "per diem"

[en.wikipedia.org]

"Per diem, or "per day," is a Latin phrase meaning specific amount of money an organization allows an individual to spend per day. Typically, though not exclusively, this is to cover travel and subsistence expenses.

Many U.S. companies and organizations use the per diem rate guide published by the General Services Administration, which provides rates for a number of cities in the United States."

Andy Gibb and Iggy Pop? Together? Do "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" or "Wanna Be Your Dog"?

elmo, i don't think mick and charlie would give up any of the cash from merchandising...mick & charlie even help design the shirts, etc..the stones have always done well selling shirts, etc...

cohl makes it on ticket sales...i'm sure he takes a part of merchandising..
but if he had his hand too deep jagger could and would drop him...ha...

Uh oh - Alvin Gibbs of the UK Subs! Andy McCoy was the guitar player in the band!

When they get paid it is deposited directly in to their personal bank accounts?
I would think so. And another thing I wonder if they carry any money when on tour?
I heard a lot of celebs use credit cards or have their bills sent to a lawyer or
their financial department? I would think they would get a five way split, after
all Charlie and Ronnie are part of the band who record the songs!! I often wonder
if their songs would be even better if they let Bill, Mick and maybe Ronnie in
on the songwriting sessions. I don't understand all of that. Cohl does not seem
to be a very popular person right now. Wonder if he and MJ and KR get along?

>> I would think they would get a five way split <<

umm ... there are four of them now, Ghost.

is it in Rocks Off/LSTNT that Bill Graham says the Stones split the money equally?
"i wouldn't work for them if they did it any other way"
it sure sounded like he meant Ronnie was paid the same as the other Stones, as early as 1981,
but perhaps it only sounded that way.

Nope...the band get massive royalties from merchandise. Prior to the ticket prices got to silly levels in the late 90's, thats actually where some of their biggest profits on a tour would have came from. The profit margins on merchandise are massive.

Things are split four ways equally between the band members. Mick and Keith earn more because of their publishing royalties.

Cohl makes each of them out a money order, then they have to go find a liquor store that will cash it.

Like Gazza, I understand that they earn much more from merchandise than from ticket sales. I was wondering what happened to the Daryl T-shirts being sold on the mechandising stands in Europe. I don't remember seeing them in the US. Did anyone see them there?

I only saw them at shows in Europe.
They are available from Darryl's website: [www.darryljones.com]

Thanks, erikjjf. I don't want one - I had just wondered why they were no longer on sale by the time the tour reached the second US leg. It was "interesting" that they were being sold alongside Stones' merchandise in Europe - it could perhaps have been interpreted as a step up the ladder. I thought they might have disappeared cos they sold out - but that can't be so if they're on sale on his site. I didn't see them during the first leg of the US tour either. So perhaps they were only ever sold in Europe for some reason. This is all a bit mysterious...

But no doubt inconsequential.
