Robert Lockwood Jr.
THE WASHINGTON POST

Robert Lockwood Jr., a Delta blues guitarist who became the torchbearer of Robert Johnson's guitar legacy and a revered musician in his own right, died Tuesday at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. He had a brain aneurysm and a stroke. He was 91.

Growing up in rural Arkansas, Lockwood learned guitar fundamentals from Johnson, who also functioned as an occasional stepfather though there was only a four-year age difference.

A professional musician at 15, Lockwood reached wider audiences through radio work in the early 1940s from a station in Helena, Ark. One listener, B.B. King, became Lockwood's pupil, and years later Lockwood advised the addition of horns to King's band to disguise his imperfect sense of keeping time.

In 1996, on the very last night I lived in Manhattan, I went to see Robert at Chicago Blues which is (was?) on or near 14th Street. He did Love In Vain. On the wall next to him was a photo (THAT photo) of his stepfather. People were talking, not paying attention to what I considered a VERY poignant musical moment. I shouted, at no one in particular, "QUIET!!" A PAINED look crossed Robert's face. He looked at me and shook his head no. It was as if he was saying "That's OK, man. You don't have to do that. So what if these fools don't know who I am. You do. That's all that matters."

He must have been the last one around who actually plaid with Robert Johnson. Or are there still any other old blues cat out there who has any connection to Robert?

but never recorded by Johnson......Little Boy Blue & Take A Little Walk With Me...

Both available on the hard to find LP -
Mississipi Country Blues Vol 1 - Document DLP519

Also check out his later recordings..

I had a look on Honey Boy Edwards page and saw this picture of him and our boy Keith on stage. Just think what is going around in Keiths head at that time, like here I am sitting and playing with this guy who plaid with Robert Johnson... well Keith has plaid with lots of old blues cats but still, the whole thing of passing on the heritage from generation to generation must have been on Keiths mind.

I went to a nice blues gig a few months back, a Finnsih blues band celebrating their 20 years on stage, Wentus Blues Band. For this gig they had put together a bunch of cats that they have been working with through the years:
Eddie Kirkland
Louisiana Red
Lazy Laster
+ some young blues guys like:
Omar Dykes
Kim Wilson
Mick Taylor

When Red did his set, he asked Taylor to join him on stage. Red was sitting down and he also asked for a chair for Mick. Mick came out on stage and he then did a several minutes long speach on how he spent a night with Red in the mid 90’s on Reds hotel room. Red gave him the full story of the blues. Red being the cousine of Howlin Wolf, Mick was really appreciating that night. He had got the blues fom an older generation and then Mick talked about his “adopted” Niko, the guitar guy in Wentus and how he is passing on the blues to him. What a moment.
Then Taylor sat down and they did You Got To Move and Shake Your Mone Maker together. Like three generations, Red + Taylor + Nico. Brrrrrr. Pass it on the the next generation.

Jan Richards asked....
Or are there still any other old blues cat out there who has any connection to Robert?

Although he passed away in 1972, Johnny Shines' cousin
Calvin Frazier is another relatively unknown bluesman who
travelled with Johnson and in 1938 recorded some of his material
....Frazier doesn't have Johnson's talent and his covers of the Johnson
songs dont have the same bite...but still another peek into Mr Johnson's world....

Lilly Mae - Honeymoon Blues
I'm In The Highway Man - Terraplane Blues
Double Crossing Blues - Kind Hearted Woman
