The Best Stones Album Cover Is . . .
Posted by: camper88 ()

Actually, I'm hoping that you can tell me.

I've thought about this a bit and would like to propose that any answers include the following distinctions (or not):

1. Best London/Decca cover:
2. Best Rolling Stones Records cover:
3. Best CD cover:
4. Best live Album cover:
And
5. Best overall cover:
6. Worst Cover
(You can cut and paste this list if it makes it easier)

Spirited debate is most welcome as is a stout defense of your choices.
Political debate is strongly discouraged and may result in your disqualification when it comes to prizes, professional advancement, or desirable sexaul attraction.

Okay, I'll start . . .

1. Best London/Decca cover: Aftermath . . . love the double exposure
2. Best Rolling Stones Records cover: Sticky Fingers . . . how can you not like the zipper, even if it did create a skip in Sister Morphine until they figured out to ship the album with the zipper all the way down
3. Best CD cover: Stripped, just enough menace, just enough of the boys
4. Best live Album cover: GYYYO, love Charlie, love his ass
And
5. Best overall cover: Exile On Main Street. Don't know if I can even explain this one. It's a freak show, revival, carnival, peep show, confessional and street-side documentary, complete with the scrawl of a handwritten title and production notes. A perfect hint and reflection of the album.

I second all five choices.
2. SF cover is a true cultural artifact. Everyone knows what it is. Back then it was pretty cutting edge, right on the brink of obscene.
5. EOMS cover is like the cloudy collage of music within.

Hmmm, too many different topics to wrap my feeble brain around. But as far as best stones album cover. For obvious reasons I think you have to go with Sticky Fingers. Close seconds to Exile, Goats, and Some Girls. Oh yeah and BB too.

Goats? Really? Personally, I never got GHS' cover. Freaks me out a bit, reminds me somewhat of Hitchcock's Frenzy from the previous year.

That's why it is cool. You kind of have to wonder where tehy got some of these ideas from?

I think the SF cover is overrated and very plain, not a very good cover, though I've never seen the original LP. But on CD it's not a very good cover at all.

Best 60's cover is Let It Bleed

Best 70-80's cover is Exile

Best CD is Stripped

Best live cover is Ya-Ya's

Best overall is Let It Bleed

1. Best London/Decca cover: No opinion on this one, bunch of good covers but none jump out at me as "best"

2. Best Rolling Stones Records cover: Sticky Fingers -- instantly memorable, even people who are not big Stones fans know this cover

3. Best CD cover: Voodoo Lounge -- very cool -- just like the CD

4. Best live Album cover: Stripped (if this counts as a live album) --- just a great Stones photo

And
5. Best overall cover: Exile --- perfectly reflects the electic brillance of the record.

1. the British Aftermath
2. Exile on Main Street, fuzzy images and dirty needles music...both kinds.
3. Always dug the It's only Rock and Roll cover, so that will be my fave CD pick.
4. Best live cover....Get Your Ya Yas Out, of course.
5. Best overall covers, the first two British albums, boy did they they look tough.

1. Best London/Decca cover: The Rolling Stones: total power and determination.

2. Best Rolling Stones Records cover: Well it has to be Sticky.

3. Best CD cover: Flashpoint. Just kidding, Black n blue. The simple photo with Keith and Mick and the boys works well on CD. Actually I think Undercover has a cool and quite modern cover.

4. Best live Album cover: Love you live, although it would have been better without Micks writing and had they added all the photos with them biting eachother.

5. Best overall cover: Some Girls. Their best.

Sorry, I was wrong, the best cover is Let it bleed. And I might add Buttons and Aftermath.

The hologram cover on the original issue of On Her Satanic Majesties Request was quite cool in its fay. I still have 2 copies of it but, no turntable.

That's the best cover of all. Keith has never looked so cool.

I agree that CD's have taken away a lot of the impact of their greatest covers: Through the Past Darkly, Sticky Fingers, and Some Girls all have elements that are not reproduced on the CD's. and Exile, which is a work of art, loses all of its impact when the images are so small.

Metamorphosis, I love this cover

Exile cover adds to the atmosphere of the whole album experience

GHS Keith looks positively charred

SG loved the original "cut out" cover

Still Life gets an honourable mention. The folded out version really invokes the stage show of the 81/82 era.

Single picture cover JJF with Brian holding a small garden fork and Keith in a flying hat and goggles. Eccentricity to a new level methinks!

With a smile on your face and a tear right in your eye

Agreed. And it grows more and more rare that people actually make good covers. The cover for What's The Story (Morning Glory) is great, and you can see that it tries to continue where LP covers left off. Since downloads became popular that artform goes away more and more. I hate when people are downloading official music.
