Of course not. What is this, Denmark? FFS, its a lame joke about Keith Richards being almost dead. They are public figures, Mick is propbalby used to these things and he knows its nothing personal but a joke about Keith and him. What really scares me is the fanatic idea of not being allowed to joke about Keith even if Micks father just passed away. Scary.

Eh? Again, if you are a public figure you have to be able to deal with these things.

How about this jokie: Keith at the PR for Some Girls 1978 about Brian. He's waiting in the pool.

This was said about a former bandmate who started their band and who was fired and who also lost his girlfriend to Keith. Brian died at the age of 27, depressed.

How about it guys, any letters to Keith about this?

Besides it all seems to really be about the hopes of fans - that Mick might read this. Am I wrong?

I can't say how Mick would feel seeing this cartoon, but going on how I would feel, if someone close to me just died and a cartoon was made referencing that I would be quite upset. In my opinion, if someone is famous like the Stones they'll probably get used to themselves being made fun of but a death is totally different and shouldn't be joked about. Yes, it is making fun of Keith more than the death of the father, but since it is included it is being joked about which I feel is wrong. Can't say this is how Mick or his family feel, but it's how I would feel and how most people I know would feel, so figure possibly Mick feels the same way. I'm not nessisarily right, but I can only judge based on my own experiences.

Also, I don't nessisarily think Mick will come here and see the cartoon, but it is in a newpaper and most likely has been or will be reproduced in other places, so it's likely he'll see it somewhere.

Sure but I really dont think you can compare yourself to Mick, he has been a star, wellknown to large parts of the world from an early age and if he's really hurt by a joke thats been repeated for thirty years about his mate Keith, I'd be very surprised. I dont hink stuff like that bothers him at all. Its a cartoon, he's Mick Jagger and Keith has been "almost dead" for a long time, he's father passed away and the cartoon doesnt say anything bad about his father. If they made a cartoon directed at my father (this carton is about Keith not Micks father) who is totally unknown and about me who's also unknown I'd probably be hurt and very very confused.

Re: Tasteless, but I Must Admit Pretty Funny As Well

Just to clairify, I know that the cartoon is directed at Keith, and I highly doubt Mick would be upset at Keith being made fun of for being "almost dead". No, it doesn't say anything bad about his father but it still is joking about the response people have to the death and that is what I found wrong about it. This is my opinion, and I don't think people have to agree, just expressing how I feel.

Also, I think feelings of loss over death are universal so even stars are going to be upset and sensitive. We're all humans, so I was basing my views on those of a person thinking how another person might feel, even though that other person may be a star. I believe that it is possible that he would be a litte sensitive right now. Some things are universal, and in my opinion this is one. Again, this is how I see it and you don't have to agree.

Yes but they are used to the media and have used the media and are in fact in many aspects a creation by the media. Of course Mick is sad about his father passing away but he is used to the media by now.

Difficult isn't it ?
I was cracking tasteless jokes [along with the vicar !] at my own father's funeral. Other folks might not bbe so comfortable with it.
FWIW, I think mick would see the funny side. Many of us use irreverant humour as a defence in our blackest moments...the risk is always that somebody else will be offended.

[Some folks didn't like my Keith related re-working of the Python "bring out your dead" scene a while ago. We're all different.]

Who said you are not allowed? From what I wrote/read, all we said was that it's an old boring, joke. If you still find it funny, that's fine.

Yeah, you're wrong. Only an simpleton would assume that Mick spends his time reading this bullshit. I'm sure he has better things to do.

They guy should have drawn it, laughed about his own idea, felt sorry he could not use it in the paper, and put it in his personal portofolio, never to be taken out again.

Don't blame him for the drawing, but I do blame 'them' for printing it in the paper, which means willingly confronting the family with it. This is not a major event where you can say: the free press and the public's right to know is more important than personal consequences. Like when Bush would also turn out to be gay and shagged the democrates candidate or something like that. Or like Clinton-Lewinski.

So funny: I think so. But to print it is VERY tasteless.

Excellent point LA Forum in pointing out Keith's 1978 comments regarding Brian:
"He's waiting in the pool." Mind you this is after he had stolen his girlfriend!

Or how about Mick commenting on stealing Jerry Hall from Bryan Ferry in the mid 70's: "He was busy working on his album while I was working on his chick."

The point is, these guys are the farthest thing in the world from tender softies, and yes I'm pretty sure they'd ALL get a chuckle from the cartoon.

The Stones are not looked upon as real people and therefore are made fun of and even have the death of Mick's father lampooned. The press have been attacking them forever and I doubt it will stop anytime soon. Have they not fed upon this negative press carcass themselves? Beatles good, Stones bad?

Tasteless or not I think it would only Mick or the Jagger family's place to say anything. I don't think he needs anyone to do this for him. If you feel so offended by the cartoon that you must write a letter to the editor or the cartoonist then I have some Mohammed cartoons to tell you about...

If by "balances" out some of the other print media of NYC, you mean pushes Rupert Murdock's right wing Republican agenda, you are absolutely right. It's very similar to Fox News (which Murdock also owns). They "report" only negative stories about liberals, democrats, independents, and ignore all of the negative stories about Iraq, Republicans, etc.

I'm sure the motive behind this was to take a jab at the Stones, who are well known for their leftist leanings (Clinton party, Sweet Neocon, etc). I'm sure the Post wouldn't make a joke about Toby Keith's dying father. I would use another Republican musician, but I can't think of one . . .

If you want balance, you could purchase "The Sun", which has a right slant, but doesn't pretend that certain things are not happening (you know, Iraq, Katrina, Halliburton, Iran, North Korea, etc . . .).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I would never desigante myself
as anyone's moral conscience, however, with that said, today's cartoon is
a joke about Paul McCartney's soon to be exwife's wooden leg.

Being tasteless and humorous are not always mutually exclusive--suppose it depends on one's tolerance level for such things.

What could keith possibly have been asked that led to this answer? just wondering...

as for the cartoon, it was funny, end of story. It is not meant to hurt anyone, or be analyzed to death. In this politcally correct world I am surprised it was published.

I am a lifetime stones fan, i live in NYC, but those things really dont matter.

i read it, i laughed, i made a copy of it (ill stick it in my copy of The Stones in cartoons, when I finally buy it) and then forgot about it.

Indian humor is the best. It's very spicy and can curry favor with anyone.
