Lennon was always great at screaming, bet voice ever all categories. Totally unique. He's the man.

Jagger, just before the second solo on When The Whip Comes Down (Detroit 78). Priceless screaming, in sync with the times of punk.

I always liked the scream on Comfortably Numb by Waters. Obviously Daltrey on WGFA. Someone help me though, Bon Scott had to scream at some point in a song didnt he?

Despite what whitem8 seems so sure of, it is indeed McCartney who is the most prominent screamer on Twist and Shout. In the middle as they scale up the ahh's, John starts, George joins, Paul Joins, then it's John who yells Wow Wow, and Paul who adds the fourt ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh that ends up in a scream.

I agree with the gist of the thread that the Beatles were the best at it, but no one mentioned the best of all screams: check out Lennon in the middle of Slow Down.

"make up your mind, 'cause I gotta go"

The way Kurt Cobain sang overall. Especially his last few screams on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" from Unplugged in NY.

Bowie on "Its No Game #1" from 'Scary Monsters' on the line "no more free steps to heaven"

It sounds like he's being disembowelled.

Good call on "personality Crisis" by the NY Dolls!

Lotsa good suggestions here.
Another "scream", but of a different kind, is the
"I don't have the strenght...to get-up-and-take-another SHO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-T"
from the Manchester 66 album, that's a crying bluesy amazing scream.

The best screams ever are from Mick Jagger in Sympathy For The Devil. No one can touch it, period!

ChelseaDrugstore made a good contribution with James Brown on Mother Popcorn. That is priceless stuff indeed.

Kurt Cobain on Where Did You Sleep Last Night sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear it. Unheard off.

wait, so who actually did the screaming on twist and shout? there must be video on youtube to confirm this. and i assumed it was lennon on revolution, as he wrote that song.
btw, whoever mentioned monkberry moon delight--thats a great call, a real vocal workout from mccartney there. wow, everyone has so much great music at their fingertips here.

A couple of disclaimers: I do not put The Who in the same league with the Stones, nor do I have Daltrey in my top few favorite rock singers. However, the scream in "Won't Get Fooled Again" is the best, I think.

- Steven Tyler in "Dream on" & more

PARTICULARLY

- Glenn Hughes in "Burn": fantastic ! (very good singer)
- Robin Zander in "Surrender": powerfull ! (has his moments)

Just want to prop up "Monkberry Moon Delight" once more. Even though Paul never really screams per se, he belts the whole song with much gusto. It's one of my fave Paul songs ever.
Have we mentioned Jagger's scream in YCAGWYW after the organ/choir swell?
This is just a matter of taste here but I never liked Gillan's screams in "Child in Time" very much. And I love Deep Purple too. Gillan did some phenomenal screeching in his version of "Jesus Christ Superstar"; especially in the song "Gethsemane". ("...allright, I'll die...")
But for the high heavy metal screaming I like Plant in "Since I've been loving you".
For anyone who is familiar with Steve Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" there is some good screaming by Len Cariou in "Epiphany".

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
