I believe Mick's public response was "We'll get someone good...a good dancer. Who knows, maybe I'll play bass." All of which was quite funny and mirrored his response to Taylor's departure ("I'm sure we can find a six-foot blonde guitarist who can do his own make up."). Of course, after hearing Mick's bass playing on A BIGGER BANG, I'd almost be willing to take him up on his offer.
i don't remember the exact quote but it was something like.......no big deal, playing bass for the rolling stones isn't all that difficult. i also seem to remember the "who's bill" line.
Come on, Keith & Charlie said in interviews that they missed seeing that "still-standing" guy on the stage. I think it was on Rock & Folk (french magazine) or something like that.
From a "band" point of view, the guy leaves the band, you can't moan and cry that he's gone. Mick has always been looking forward, that's why the Stones are still relevant today. Don't get me wrong, I do think Bill was a fantastic bass player and his association with Charlie made one of the bass rythm line in Rock, but he's gone and would rather play old blues/swing standard with his Rythm Kings...
I still miss Bill's bass playing from the early sixties. (1963 on) The band sounded so mush tighter than. Still the best band in the world but they are just not the same without the Wyman bass! (And Brian) I guess I miss the chemistry that Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill, and Charlie had many years ago. (In ancient history)

I recall an interview with Ron Wood just after Bill Wyman left. Ronnie said that Mick Taylor had been suggesting he return as lead guitarist and Ronnie get bumped to bass. Ronnie then said that it wouldn't happen but he thought the idea was interesting.
I was there too and I can tell you TooTough is right :-)

the ironic thing being that every deceased Stones member has actually died AFTER leaving the band.

whats also Ironic was how pissed off Keith seemed about it. He really wanted mick T out of the band. And ron was really becoming a presence arleady at that point.
