this may be my absolute all-time favorite stones track. hearing 'slave' for the first time was like being baptized. and 25 years later it still takes me to another galaxy.
that monster keith riff, jagger's pleading vocals, charlie and bill laying down that propulsive rhythm, and that indelible sonny rollins sax solo.
six and a half minutes of pure rock and roll bliss.

excellent point. the sound is incredible. the sound of charlie's drums at the beginning of 'slave' has never been surpassed, imho.

I'd like to hear a Bob re-mix of GHS and IORR--two of the flatter-sounding 70's albums.

Absolutely---my question is after he did such a great job, and Mick has said it himself many times...they never used him again! He could have done wonders for Undercover, not to mention any of their more recent releases.

'tis a mystery.
i forgot to mention that excellent dog bark you hear early in 'slave'...
Slave is a great track. In addition, I think that the "slow side" of Tatoo You has grown in stature over the years. Listening to it today, it really is amazingly good -- even if it was pieced together.

I just rediscovered this song again too last month after many years of not hearing it....I forgot how great it is! It's the best jam, lot of good guitar playing all the way through, sax solo, even a little Mick "rap"!! It always struck me as a really funky hot number with a nice jazz feel....I love it...wish the Stones would play it LIVE in AC!!!!
i wish we could here more stones 'jams'. also, on the second side, how about 'worried about you' and tops! i think these are both super-underrated gems.
like, an outtake. It's like slave with no vocals and raw. Mick is heard with an occasional scream or oh yeah. I'll put it on Hot Stuff if my computer lets me.

I don't think it's a dog barking, I think it's the slightest friction on the guitar strings just before Keith launches into the riff, probably setting his fingers on the fretboard. That's just a guess, but how I've always heard it, and it's something that's easy to do (by that, I mean unintentionally).

"Slave" is not only the most outstanding cut on "Tattoo you" for me, but possibly in my top ten Stones tracks ever. Yet when the album came out, it took years for me to appreciate it. Thankfully, the CD reissue extended the song even further. I'm not normally someone who is really into extended jamming and soloing but if that track was half an hour long, I'd never get bored with it.
The entire band absolutely excels on it. Charlie especially, not forgetting the great Sonny Rollins on sax
I have just listened to the B side of Tattoo You for the first time in YEARS..... how could I have forgotten what a magical run of songs is on there? Superb music!!
