TAMI Show coming out on DVD

Found on the Steve Hoffman audiophile/mastering message board.

Dick Clark Productions is releasing the complete & uncut movie from the original 35mm negatives. There will be bonus footage.

2007 could shape up to be quite the year for Stones footage. Let's hope so, at least.

I saw this in a theater about 4 years ago. It's a gas!

its a great movie. I have heard that the full reheasals were also filmed and recorded and there are three additional Stones songs they did not perform in movie.

I saw this originally in the mid/late 80's on tv with the Stones performance included. Saw a repeat a few years later but the Stones were omitted due to some legalities.
This might have been the first video I saw of Brian in concert.

Wow . . . that's amazing news. Well, with the TAMI Show finally out on DVD, and with the Girl Can't Help It on DVD in its original Cinemascope (2.35:1 aspect ratio), there is only Ladies and Gentlemen with the Quad soundtrack remixed for 5.1 to wait for.

It was out on DVD about 3 years ago with Chuck Berry 'introducing' the artists.

really? do you mean 3 songs from rehearsals or the actual show? I've never heard of them performing songs at the gig that werent subsequently broadcast/released in some form of another

Undoubtedly my favourite Brian-era Stones footage. An absolutely electrifying performance, especially by Mick and Brian.

Im not 100% sure but as I understand it, those three songs are not from show but from rehearsals. would make sense they rehearsed a number of songs and cut number of songs down for the actual show. like today (see Beacon) they rehearse certain songs and not all rehearsed songs appear in show. so they have enough ammu in their gun but can decide shortly before which songs would work best in show. well the information I have is quite old because a couple of years ago, some company in Italy (my brother in law knows owner) tried to get rights for TAMI show for Video and DVD release but it never worked out.

This news is a big deal in our house.

My wife WENT TO the TAMI show taping with her sister!

We'll be freeze-framing those crowd shots to find them!

I think I own that on video, and it is a mish mash of clips from the TAMI show and the TNT show, which was held a year later. It's OK if you just want to see the Stones footage, but the original TAMI Show, which captures one of the great single "gigs" of all time, is historically significant.

No word on the release, Elmo, but my guess would be early in '07.

The TAMI/TNT mix hosted by Chuck, was it called "That Was Rock"? I used to have that on VHS when I was a kid. I wore it out studying and ripping off the stage moves of a very hyperactive young Keith.

checked my source again, he said the three additional tracks were Carol, Tell Me and Confessing The Blues.

so its in relatively easy to guess why those three songs did not make final setlist for show:

Carol - they already had one Chuck Berry uptempo rocker: Around And Around
Confessing The Blues - slow blues, probably not suitably for young teenage audience TV show
Tell Me - another ballad, they could choose between this and Time Is On My Side and they chose the latter for the show, probably they were not confident enough in their own written songs at the time and thought Time Is On My Side would work better, its a ballad, but with more energy (although I like Tell Me a lot).

If this all is on new DVD with remixed sound, show & rehearsals (together with extra songs at rehearsals) will make up for a great document of live Stones in 1964. I really beg that everything gets way on DVD.

Dude

I agree with you there. The TAMI show is the greatest rock and roll performance flick ever and "The Girl Can't Help It" is the greatest rock and roll flick ever made. Bar none.

The thing is, this DVD was only available in Down Under.

"The T.A.M.I./TNT Show (That Was Rock) 1964/65", Umbrella Music DVD, DAVID0168, Nov. 12, 2003, Australia.

The DVD is still listed at Sanity but no more available.

My vote goes to "Otis at Monterey"

There are plenty of better rock movies than that. (Hard Day's Night? Don't Look Back? Gimme Shelter?)

Don't lose your head over it.

No real argument here but it was James Brown's performance that was electrifying.

james brown was grandstanding, Mick could have came out for 20 little 5 second encores too if he wanted to

I had this on vhs, lent it out to never be returned by a ingrate, then bought it on ebay and it was never mailed

I need this back in my extensive video collection

I'm not sure that the Girl Can't Help It is the greatest rock flick ever made, but it is as important as Hard Day's Night or Gimme Shelter, and without doubt it is the best non-documentary "musical" featuring rock music. It is, unconsciously perhaps, a movie about the most important moment in rock history -- its birth. To see the transition from more traditional 50's popular music (Julie London, Ray Anthony) to smoking rock/R&B (Gene Vincent, Little Richard, Fats and holy sh*t -- Eddie Cochran with that huge red Gretsch), all on the same stage. The great and the not-so-great (the Chuckles, with the lead vocalist on accordian?), black and white, all viewed as being part of the "popular music of today." It captures the sleazy side of payola and starmaking. In retrospect, as a rock document, it's amazing.

Apart from the music, the film itself has its rabid fans and its critics. Some view it as a terribly conservative film -- Jayne Mansfield's character is a sex object, whose goal is life is to be "domestic." Others sense irony in her portrayal. I personally think that it is a very entertaining 50's comedy, with very likable, memorable characters. I think that its reputation has been hurt because it has only been available on video, with washed out colors and pan-and-scan editing that eliminates about 40% of the picture. The recent DVD release (which I was only able to acquire as part of an overpriced Jayne Mansfield Collection) corrects this for the first time.

I got the DVD from a UK company and it was a region 2 release, not Australian.

That's the common opinion, but I think that the fact that James Brown put on such a great show inspired the Stones -- notice how animated Mick, Keith and even Bill are -- to put on one of their best early performances. We're lucky that it was recorded for posterity.

Dude

I saw Otis at Monterey in the flesh and the video doesn't come close. I stand by what I said. Now some of that footage in Europe of Otis and Sam and Dave, now that is great stuff. Besides Otis at Monterey wasn't a movie and the TAMI show and the Girl Can't Help It were movies.
