ímagine two sold out shows (90.000 each) with loads
of young people last summer...

I think it does matter. Makes you proud of them (see Rio concert).
The Stones fever has gone.
I miss the rush on tickets (A'dam remember?), news on TV saying they sold out concerts in a few hours,...
Sure you miss that too, don't you?

Having watched the clip, I find it interesting to note just how "up" the crowd seem to be!

No need to hire extras back in those days.

the stones cant even fill more than half of a stadium anymore, ticket sales are pretty bad on this leg of the tour. Thoes days of 90,000 people are over....

Mick (having gone to the London School of Economics) knows darn well why the stadiums aren't selling...high ticket prices and over saturation.

Obviously, as fans, it's a catch-22.....we want to see our band. But we can only afford so many shows at those prices....and touring every year or every other year eliminates the crazy anticipation that sells out stadium shows.

Keith stopped playing ''Empty'''...but yeh its the ticket price...thats the reason.

90,000 x 100 = 9 mill
50,000 x 200 = 10 mill
That is basic lse first class calculations.

May I suggest that you remember Horsens and Moncton? 85.000 people in attendance at each concert. It's simply not true that they can't fill more than half a stadium.

Indeed, they anticipated this decrease in demand. They should triple ticketprices in Holland, Germany and the UK next year :-)

So it´s about grabbing money, you admit it.
Instead of playing to 90,000 people for $ 100
they< play to 50,000 for 200$, because they
can get hold of one mio. more...

Well, it does. I remember seeing the VHS of Let´s Spend The Night
Together by Hal Ashby. I was overwhelmed by the crowd at Sun Devil
Stadium - it was packed! The helicopter ride over that mountain,
when Beast Of Burden started and the crowd got wild. Man, packed
stadiums were another reason to join the Stones wagon in 1981/82.

It could also be that they reach more different people in different places of a given country. And just because there's more economical sense doing it this way doesn't mean it's all about the money. I think Charlie is the most honest of them all. He said: "The money is part of it". Like it is with any band.

The Fever is Gone?? Its not that the fever is gone, its the prices have gotten out of control. Had the prices stayed in check, like lets say $60 per ticket. You would have 90,000 in Phili again. EASY!!!!!!!

Well, don't forget, Rio was a free show on Copacabana Beach... I wonder what attendance would have been if they charged the standard price there huh?
I sure don't miss shows selling out in minutes, that sucked not getting a ticket!
smiling smiley
They would sell tickets faster if the prices weren't so high. The prices are high due to the large scale stage production and crew.
The Fenway Park shows sold out quickly though, remember? Probably because they were the first two shows of the tour.

Personally, I'd be ok with a scaled down production, just a basic stage, no frills... I just like to hear them play. Take the Beacon stage setup on tour in arenas or smaller venues. Simple and nice.

I would love that too. In a stadium though. Imagine The Stones on the Superbowl stage in the middle of a stadium. Not a bad idea, except for the echo.

Probably not much higher than 40-Licks but exponentially higher than the '81 tour as this link originally referenced.

This maybe sold out, but wouldn´t you love it packed?

Er, don´t come with that "protect the lawn" argument.
Boston has got other venues.

size doesn't matter too much..........it's how you perform that counts...........you could apply that to sex as well

Yes, it does matter. Moreover if you want to leave not as a Papy Band.

Anyway, thought you might like to be reminded of what Rolling Stone made of it at the time.

I was there, strange with over half the field sealed off.
