OT: Elvis Does Dylan
Posted by: WMiller ()

So....I'm in an Elvis mood this afternoon and out of my computer comes "Tomorrow is a Long Time". I happened to click over and see that it was written by Bob Dylan (didn't know that). I wasn't aware that Elvis recorded any Dylan penned tunes. As reading the liner notes, Dylan is quoted as saying that it's his favorite cover ever done of one of his songs. It also says that this was the first Dylan song that Elvis recorded.

I know that there are a number of folks on here that can rattle them off in seconds flat. Let's hear them.

Thanks in advance!

Rod Stewart also did an excellent cover of "Tommorow Is A Long Time" on the "Every Picture Tells A Story" lp

Oh yes that's great, but I like Rod's version of Mama, You've Been On My Mind on Never A Dull Moment...I listened through that LP yesterday, BTW.

This sounds familiar now that you mention it. I figured that either you or Erik would know. Are these the only two?

Yes they do, just like whisky. It's a very cool whisky-cover on that Sing It Again, Rod...shaped as a glass of bourbon.

On the "Walk a mile in my shoes" boxed set, he does a quick version of "I shall be released" as well

being quite a big EP fan, i liked a lot of the one liners he used to sing covering various peoples songs onstage....glen campbel, tom jones to name a few..
my fav covers thou are Tony Joe Whites - polk salad annie - im sure there aint many gonna disagree here..
the great thing about Elvis and the stones is their musical catalogues are massive!.. you can drift to different styles and era's with the same musicians..
if you feel like blues - its there, or a bit of gospel, rock, reggae (stones do this so well, i wish theyd do more!.)..
its why these guys will always have a place in my heart...they stuck around and didnt make a quick buck!!

and a note to mention about the latest stones happenings and all the disruptions..
these guys have a pretty good excuse to be tired... but can anyone say that the latest leg of the tour hasnt been the most productive?? loads of new songs....

Great box set that, don'tcha think, Mr G? Shame Elvis didn't do more Dylan covers. Imagine what his take on Lay Lady Lay or If You See Her Say Hello would have been like?

yeah its excellent

'I Threw it all away' would have been made for his post-divorce cry-in-my-beer songs, dontcha think?!

The most bizarre possible cover would have been "I went to see the gypsy" - as it was supposedly written about (or inspired by) Dylan going to see him performing in Vegas (even though the storyline is somewhat false, as - unlike in the song - the two of them never actually met)

Yeah, I Threw It All Away might have been up there with Hurt, I've Lost You, Fool et al. Highly underrated, Elvis' break-up songs. Sung with incredible passion. Actually, the whole of Elvis's late period is underrated.

Elvis had a great sense of humour, so I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd done "Gypsy". Or maybe he did and it's yet to surface on one of those FTD releases.

he did. It was the b-side of "In the Ghetto"

Unless youre mistakenly referring to Dylan's "I shall be released", which he also recorded, as stated earlier.

When you look in the dictionary for "walking music encyclopaedia" you see a picture of Gazza.

If he were alive today, Elvis could have done a rip-roaring version
of the new Thunder On The Mountain.

...Gazza, I knew I'd seen that picture before.

hi again all..somat else of interest i remember...
i went to an elvis - part tribute gig about 18 months ago at the Robin2 in bilston (wolverhampton UK). Elvis' original band from 70s were performing - Ronnie tutt, James Burton, Jerry Scheff & Glen D Hardin - along with my friend Jenson bloomer (lead vocals).
Before the show, Jenson took me backstage to meet the guys - (got a great photo with em all)
Anyway to cut a long story short, i was chattin with james about telecasters and asking the usual advice that i could take away and practice on mine, and we got talking about the stones..
I remebered him mentioning this to me when we met previously at Ronnie scotts in birmingham england 95 - about 2 weeks before the stones wembley gig - we were hyped up then and mentioned it to him then..
He said something to me that i always remembered and wonder if anyone knows of this...
He said they "i think the band with elvis" met the stones and had a jam.....
now memories are not to clever here but i am sure he said this!!.
i dont know if he meant the TCB band on its own or with elvis but he definately said they had met..
Can anyone else relate to this at all?.. if so id love details..
Maybe someone high up in the stones camp can answer this better??.

sounds odd but i cant see James telling porkies... id love to know more..

Doughboy..

PS.. whats a greg lake todd?..my slangs not up to this one..

i know that in 89 scotty moore come to st louis to see keith and they and ronnie had and all night jam in keith's hotel room. it could be what james was refering to although there could be other explainations.

Greg Lake - as in Emerson, Lake & Palmer (aka ELP) - it was attempted humor that went over like a lead balloon....

Yeah, I can well Elvis imagine singing:

Well, there's hot stuff here and it's everywhere I go
I was thinkin' 'bout Alicia Keys,
Couldn't keep from crying
When she was born in Hell's Kitchen,
I was living down the line
I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be

... with a twinkle in his eye, and a laugh never far away. Or maybe this -

I been to St. Herman's church and I've said my religious vows
I've sucked the milk out of a thousand cows
I got the porkchops, she got the pie
She ain't no angel and neither am I
