Jame Brown in concert question

James Brown will play concert in my city at 5.11. Do you know how his concert looks, is he still good in performance or just shadow of the glory old days? Shoul I go to concert, or forget about it? What is your suggestion?

He used to be the hardest working man in showbiz; don't know if he still is.

Borna, I would definetly go. Just to see history in perfomrnace. I am a huge fan of his. But his shows are much much calmer events now because he no longer can dance like he used to. he will still shake & shimmy and mash a few potatoes but only implied. I gues it depends what mood he is in. Because there ahve been shows where he just goes throuhg the motions and does every JB clichee in the book. Othet time she will stand there and really sing his ass off. becasue after all is said and done he is still a great singer.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Several years ago a friend and I bought a VIP ticket package for James Brown, I think it was $125.00 a ticket. This ment tickets in the PIT and post show reception with deserts, drinks and James Brown in attendance.

After the show we waited for at least an hour (about 100 people there), James finally comes down the stairway wearing his winter coat, sunglasses, winter gloves. Along with him he had his tour manager, building security guy, I think his wife or backup singer and a couple venue employees. He walks down the steps, shakes the hands of 3 people and then mutters "Ok, now where's my car"..they then escorted him back up the stairs. This pissed off EVERYONE! So, I yelled "He's getting away" and about 25 people followed him up the stairs, through the theater, backstage area and then out into the street. He got in his limo and rolled down the window and signed maybe 10 autographs and then the rolled up the window and pulled away.

Saw him at the end of September this year near Chicago, I'm not a huge fan, just went more for the experience of seeing a legend. He has aged very well - still moves quite well and voice has held up great. Show is a bit over the top, but entertaining none the less...VERY tight band. Worth getting the cheap seats for definately.

I saw him twice in 24 hours two years ago. Supported the RHCPs in Hyde Park on the Friday and appeared at the Olympic Torch Concert in The Mall on the Saturday (where Ronnie also appeared with Rod Stewart). Glad that I saw him but was left with the feeling that he was clearly past his peak. To be honest after 10 - 15 minutes his muic all tended to sound the same.

Saw James Brown last night here in Vienna and I'm sorry to say "poor old man".
His band is one of world's best, no doubt, really fantastic, great musicians, but Mr. Brown himself should have stopped some years ago. He's just a persiflage of himself, but not funny. His voice couldn't even fill a small hall of 4000 people. Of course he cannot move like in the "old days", but then either he should stop touring or perform a show that is suited better for him nowadays. But I think he needs the money.

Hey Borna, I went to see James Brown perform about 4 months ago at the Rams Head Live, a very small venue (1,200 standing, 3 levels) here in the US located in Baltimore, Maryland. We're very lucky to have this new club in our area. If you want to, you can be right in front with your arms on the stage with no problem at any show, which is where I was for James. I love James Brown, always have and he is still one of my all time favorite performers. He doesn't move quite like he used to, he is 73 years old, but make no mistake, he does perform! He still has amazing stage presence! You can feel it! The band that he had when I saw him was excellent. Really tight, but not quite like his original band. They were the best. I think there is only about 1 or 2 of the guys that are still with him. Unfortunately, Maceo Parker, his main sax player from the 60's (as in, "Maceo, I want you to Blow"!) and his brother, Melvin (drummer for James), are not among them. I have heard talk that Maceo will join up with James again at some point next year after his own tour is over? The band had 3 full drum kits and a total of about 18 people (including two very sexy dancers) on stage. The dancers are..."quite good"!! During "It's A Mans World", James is wearing a bright red leather suit and shoes with a clear spotlight just on him and in the middle of the song drops to his knees with the mic stand about a foot off the floor with a face looking like a man in pain and he's really into it, sweat dripping off his face, ten feet in front of me and I can feel it! Priceless! Go get a ticket, Borna and get as close as you can so you can feel it! LOL! (After the show, I finally had a chance to meet him, shake hands, say thanks and exchange a few words at his limo. Something I had always wanted to do.)

I wouldn't go. I absolutely adore James Brown, one of my top three with Stones and Sam Cooke, but (therefore?) I find it just too sad to see him now, unable to even speak thanks to his false teeth, no voice, nothing, stanting lost in the middle of a stage. Poor James, a terrible downfall for a complex personality, and a legendary musician.

Billy Wilder once said about Chaplin: "He's undoubtedly a genius, but I suspect he's not a very intelligent genius". I'm afraid the same applies to Brown. The man fought massive battles, won superb victories, but in the end...
Sad sad sad.

If only Sam Cooke had not been shot! Now he was as smart as he was talented and he'd surely still be on the top of our world. Eternal regrets for the downfall of James and the death of Sam.

I mistakenly said that James is 70 in my above post. He is actually 73.

(Did ya get that ticket yet, Borna?! LOL!)

One day you will hear a James Brown song playing somewhere...

Your thought will either be:

"Man, what a great show that was!"

or

"What a great song! I wish I had seen him when I had the chance..."

I met the GFOS at a Tower Records appearance about 28 years ago, got his autograph. He was very nice to me and everyone else.

Saw him live in a club 25 years ago. (He didn't have TAMI show moves anymore. No one in their right mind would have expected it.)

Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl about 3 years ago. He doesn't have the powers that he once had--but he's still got "it."

Go.

I saw Brown in May of 2004. He surrounded himself with professionals, but he himself was a disapointment. He has another gentleman who does a good portion of the singing.

Ive seen him about 12 times since 1968.I gave up about a decade ago when he went down to a split, landed on his ass and hobbled off the stage.

Troubador, you saw James in 68?? Please, tell me more! I am green with envy. I've seen the Dallas 68 DVD, as well as some Paris 71 footage (the Lowe Power Peace concert - untouchable), what a killer he was!

I first saw James Brown live in 1986 and he was rubbish. I've seen him a few more times since and I've yet to see a good show. I'm a huge fan, and it's pretty impressive what he can still do, but it's not as exhilirating as the classic stuff you see on tv.
