version of Under My Thumb from Altamont

In no way am I intending to spark a discussion about Altamont or what happened at the end of Under My Thumb.

Conversely, I was watching Gimme Shelter and wanted to remark at how fantastic the version of Under My Thumb was from Altamont. The guitars, in particular, are just lighting up the song. It's too bad we didn't get a version of UMT on Ya Ya's.

Under My Thumb..that's what the Stones should be playing currently;

Yeah, I agree with this totally... I also really like the version of 'I'm Free' from that tour, and from Hyde Park '69... nice and slow groove, slightly (?) out of tune guitars... My old SG (back when I had an elec. guitar) used to sound all out of tune whenever playing standard chords. I like that sound. I think UMT on Gimme Shelter was kinda like that too.

UMT was very slow at Altamont...as Mick was scared the crazy Hells Angel was about to jump him

They did play it a few times during this tour, e.g. at the Giants stadium.

The San Diego '69 performance of UMT is nice, too.

IMO I'm Free is tripe, musically and lyrically, but in '69 it was a vehicle for some nice Taylor improvisation. Some Oakland, Inglewood and MSG performances come to mind. MSG 11/27 has a startling and sweet little 20 sec solo that leaves you asking "Where did THAT come from?"
