Anyway, got a home theater surround sound system the other day. Decided to try out "Dark Side of the Moon" surround sound copy that I had found. It adds a nice extra to the music.
Are there any other good albums recorded like this? I think the Floyd album was recorded in "quadraphonic", 4.1 channels.
"Upmixed" ones I've seen don't seem very interesting: it's just a remixed version, not something thought up by the artists themselves, I'm imagining?
The Who have some nice surround mixes with SACD. Roxy Music as well with Avalon. I have heard the Kinks put out some SACD's but I haven't bought any yet. Dylan Blonde on Blonde is nice also. It is a shame that SACD didn't pan out better. I like the 5.1 surround with some music. You can always just run regular stereo mixes- normal cd's, lp's, cassettes through your surround receiver though and it brings forth a much bigger sound in that format, especially when you employ a sub woofer. if you haven't figured that end out just consult with your manual. I really like my Rotel surround receiver in stereo or surround. Welcome to the club!
check out turtle soup from the turtles.recorded in 1970 (and produced by ray davies)it has to be the best surround sound rock album(i to did the home theatre last year)use the multichannel function on your reciever.somewhere friday night will give you goose bumps, when you listen to this record a afew times ,you'll e mail me or post a thanks, amazing how that record sounds, like ray new what the future held in way of 5.1,dolby,multichannel,etc.ironic filstan mentioned kinks in his post as well.
Isn't the 'Ladies & Gentlemen' soundtrack a quadrophonic release? I have never heard it on a surround system but years ago I read that the surround signal cannot be erased so the bootlegs should reproduce the quadrophonic experience.
The 2003 Sympathy For The Devil REMIX cd has a few SACD surround mixes on it. Fun.
Other SACD Surrounds that sound good: Elton John's SACDs are technically some of the better surround mixes. Billy Joel's are ok. The Police...fair. The Who's Tommy is very good too...
I haven't heard any DVD Audio surround mixes....

I love Blood on the Tracks in 5.1; if you like Jackson Browne, his new Running on Empty DVD-Audio is great. And the new Queen Night at the Opera is fun.
There are some great dts cd's out from toup (two of us productions) I have the sticky fingers version and it's like being in the studio with the stones, it's an agressive mix which means that the rear speakers are full operational (loud) There are some downloadsites where you can get this great cd. Note that this cd can only be played on dts equipment not on a normal stereo set, you will only hear noise that can damage your ears. www.toupltd.com

Blow by Blow (SACD)- Jeff Beck Autobahn - Kraftwerk Ziggy Stardust(SACD) - Bowie Pet Sounds - B.Boys (If you buy DVD Audio, you can listen 5 different pet sounds like 96kHz Mono, Stereo, Surround, Dolby Digital and DTS5.1.)
I've mentioned here previously that Oasis What's The Story 5.1 SACD sounds amazing compared to the regular CD which doesn't sound very clean. Instruments and background vocals that are buried in the mix are suddenly upfront and clear.
Roxy Music's "Avalon" Bryan Ferry "Boys and Girls" Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Peter Gabriel's solo albums, particularly "Vol. 4" and "So" Aime Mann "Bachelor No. 2" Bob Dylan - the whole mind-blowing Columbia series from a few years back. Talk Talk "Spirit of Eden" Deep Purple "Machine Head" David Bowie "Scary Monsters and Super Creeps" CAN - all their remastered albums.
DVD Audio
Queen "The Game" is probably on the most impressive, on a par with Roxy's "Avalon" and Pink Floyd's "DDSOTM"
The Doors "LA Woman" David Bowie "David Live" and "Stage" The Eagles "Hotel California"

I assume that this is not a genuine remix, since that would require access to the original master tapes.
true, but it sounds like they had access to the mastertapes. it's unbelievably good. I like it much more than the original cause I hear things now that I've never heard before. I'm still looking for the other stones releases from toup Beggars banquet and Let it bleed.
Anyone remember back in the seventies when the movie Earthquake came out? They had something new back then called Sensuround that was supposed to make seats shake during the earthquake scenes. I think it was just a big sound system that made everything in the theatre vibrate.
There's a studio surround sound version of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Pictures at an Exhibition" on their boxset, "Return of the Manticore" (and I think it's on one of their later studio releases too; can't remember the name, only that it had a locomotive on the front).

Sensuround was used at exclusive and select engagements (years ago movies would open at only one or two theatres per city, and after a few months expand to more venues) I saw Earthquake (1974), the first Sensuround movie, at the Chinese Theatre (as part of the Sensuround hoopla, they strung nets from the ceiling in case part of the ceiling was dislodged!)
Other films that used Sensurround were Midway (1976) and Rollercoaster(1977)

For an 20 extra dollars, my local massage parlor will re-enact the sensround (the world) experience and guarantee a mini-Earthquake.
Received the three DTS 5.1 CD's by Rolling Stones yesterday, and I can only say WOW. Sticky Fingers sounds superb and must have been mixed from other sources than only two-track masters. I will listen to Beggars Banquet and Let it bleed tonight and if they are soundwise anywhere near Sticky Fingers there will be a double-WOW.

..and unlike the movie "Earthquake" there's a "happy ending"...

Hi there!
I have never heard beforwe of any SACD 5:1 release of any StoneĀ“s album after the 2002 release of the ABKCO stuff!!!!!!
Mats, is there any possibility that I can trade or buy the let it bleed and beggars banquet toup dts cd's with you? I have also the toup through the past darkly dts cd. frank.
I'm slightly confused about TOUP's work... For example: Sticky Fingers... The only way to do a TRUE 5.1 mix is to work with the original masters. Since those aren't available isn't TOUP's work just field emulation? IE: taking the stereo official release, applying filters, and throwing it into a fake 5.1 pattern?
