It's seriously beginning to show - they are getting too old for this...
Posted by: lazy-slob ()

I'm sorry to write this. The Stones are as usual rolling, but this tour have been an endless stream of cancelled and rescheduled shows. It's seriously beginning to show that they are getting too old physically for this.

A Bigger Bang has been a triumph as usual, but they have to look on the facts that they can't handle touring for a-year-and-a-half anymore.

Dear Stones: Please seattle down, concentrate on a few more albums and a gig here and there, before it gets too embarrasing.

hmmm...I seem to recall a REM tour a few years back that went even worse - without anyone seemingly thinking THEY had to stop??

I believe it's just luck that has kept the Rolling Stones from having even more cancellations in the past...(I think I read somewhere on this forum that he could not forgive Keef for having broking his ribs?? I mean......) na now that they do have them....I mean ...Jeez....they've been on the road more or less for a year....in that time I've had more sick days than Mick and Keef combined!

If I had to chose between the Rolling Stones completely retiring from touring - or having them tour and possibly cancelling a few shows due to illness/fatigue - then I choose the latter. Hands down.

I don't think the Stones get embarrassed too easily, additionally, I think it's honorable to keep doing something you love, even if you get crap for it. If people want to stop going, so be it, the Rolling Stones are first and foremost about the music, they have nothing left to prove. I think Keith would be just as happy playing in a local pub playing for 20 people than if he were in a stadium playing for 50K.

LOVE LIVE THE ROLLING STONES!!!!

I think we are starting to see the Beginning of the end of the Rolling Stones as a Major Touring Act..The Dodger Stadium should be the last show in US Soil.

Boston was heavily Pappered Not Close too selling out

Chicago attendance was about 30k in a 60k stadium

Hawaii show was Cancelled due to Poor and I mean poor ticket sales

Dodger Stadium show is selling very poor, along with Oakland

If the stones tour again in the US again, they are going to play Arenas.
I hate to think this but it looks like its going to be over soon

They Still Rock.....

Good thoughts, CindyC.

And actually any of us giving the Rolling Stones advice is like others telling us what to do. Pointless.

Fact is anyone of any age who tours for a year and a half around the world is going to have off nights and physical problems.

Touring is an artificial world, no matter how much luxury may come with it if you're a major band. Changes of climate, crazy hours etc. take their toll.

Obviously Jagger has always enjoyed the challenge, but even he is human and has to rest his throat and his body.

In my career I've been on the road a lot so I am speaking from experience. But my work was behind the scenes and when I felt tired and rotten and wanted to go home, I stayed the course but always told myself, "Get it together! At least, you don't have to be on stage."

On a more important subject, CindyC. have you put a great outfit together for the show tonight?

Thanks! But you are right, the outfit is very important, and NO!!! I don't have anything good with me. There's some cute stuff at the stores, but you know what, I don't want to be one of those old ladies wearing 20 year old girl stuff, that's just weird. I was actually just about to head out to see if I could find something, except knowing me, I'll just be playing in Sephora for the afternoon and end up with nothing to wear.

Luckily that is the worst of my problems today, it is a VERY good day!

As long as people want to see their shows, there's not really any real reason to stop. There are people older than the Stones performing in all kinds of styles. I saw BB King a couple of years ago, and he sat down on a chair -- his guitar still hanging over his shoulder in a strap -- for the whole concert, and it was still worth the ticket.

What I have concerns about is the scale of their shows (regarding size, not time!). Skip the f*cking stadiums, skip the fireworks, the insanely large stages and most of the props, *and* most of the backup musicians. Then start aging with grace and make better music.

If cancellations, health problems, etc. is a problem, maybe play shorter tours and spend more time in the studio. In any case, reducing the scale of the whole freaking moneyspinning spectacle, into something that puts the music -- the raw kind of music that the Stones are really known for -- back into focus, would help the Stones *and* their fans in the long run.

Let he who has not taken a sick leave day cast the first (Rolling) stone.

The band I saw at Giants Stadium was definitely NOT too old for this. Certainly not musically.

I'm no Stones apologist, but they rocked harder and better than they have the past few years.

All this speculation about the represcussions of empty stadium seats etc is just that. The Stones and their management are very savvy about their business, and they know down to the cent when they are making or losing money.

When the tours get "too old" financially, the accountants will flag them and they will have to decide either to: quit, cut back expenses, charge more, or continue on at a loss.

I imagine that at $450 a ticket, there is a lot of profit margin built into each of their shows.

I saw both Twicks shows. I felt the first may have lacked a little. But the second show they came out roaring. It was magnificent. The real problem here is we have such high expectations of the Stones. Like many of you my life has been filled with seeing live bands. I've seen major gigs down to the band in my local boozer. But I have to say, even on a lousy Stones gig it sure takes some beating or equaling. And let's not forget whay they gave us. Well, pretty much everything. They thought in the begining they were the only people in UK to be playing black man's music. No disrespect intended please. From the word go they had the upper hand on all the competion. And as I see it, they still do. As Keith said, no ones gone this far.

If you have seen recent performances, they are NOT getting too old to play the best live show in the world. However, they ARE getting too old to (i) play numerous concerts in rain and 0 degree weather, and (ii) hold consecutive days of rehearsals then and expect to play 3 concerts in 5 days; all AFTER having already been on the road for almost a year and a half. It's just logic -- it's what your mother told you -- "don't try to do too much, get your food and rest". I blame them for lacking that logic and trying to do too much; it's unfortunate.

How about 24 hours of NO Stones-bashing or free advice for them?

When I was growing up they would say, you could become Stones Fans or you could become Rolling Stones. When you're facing the end of loaded cynicism...what's the difference?

- To take a page from my new favorite movie, we shall always come to their side, even caring as much to think that it's our band. And it is our band.

LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES!!!

OK...Ronnie's probably the lightest weight...but Charlie's probably easier to catch. But...to paraphrase a line from the FERRIS BUELLER movie...I shouldn't throw anyone with my bad back. (Actually I don't have a bad back...healthy...no sick days!)

And anyone that's read my other posts knows that I agree with drbryant.

The STEEL WHEELCHAIR TOUR seems inevitable.
If & when they tour again....they should stick to arenas & clubs and play every 4th day. Might mean less money...but do they really need the $$. More importantly it will strengthen the legend...they will ride off into the sunset with nothing (performance-wise) to be ashamed of. winking smiley

The Stones WILL play US soil again, believe it.

Why do you think they did this ill fated fall leg? BECAUSE, the USA is where the $$ is

If they play at all you can bet some shows will be in the USA, and arenas are just fine with me.

they could sell out arenas in the USA left and right EVERY YEAR without blinking an eye

USA = $$$

Slightly off topic: We in the USA pay $160-$450 US dollars per ticket to see the Stones. Is this comparable to other countries? Do they pay the equivalent in Puerto Rico, Austria, Portugal, Denmark and every other place around the globe?

Slightly on topic: hello CindyC
