Don't know how "great" one would call this guy, but I recently bumped, literally, into the Rev. Jesse Jackson. I was walking out of a restaurant, had just opened the door, and Jackson was right there in my face trying to get in. I thought it amazing that his security would be so lacking as to let that happen.

I met Suzie Quatro with her drummer on a
parking lot when I was ten.
I wore short trousers, white socks in brown
sandals and horrible glasses.
I was so ashamed, that I didn't say hello.
Another - less known - musician I met 1994
in London.
Keziah Jones was doing a promo-gig in a small
club and it was a nice concert.
I had a lot of beer and after the show I went
to the toilet.
The next person that entered was - you might
guess it - the artist himself.
As I didn't consider the situation as perfect
to start a conversation, I concentrated on my
first intentions instead.
Two more known persons I saw in the late 80s,
when I had a walk with my dog along the
Elbchausse in Hamburg.
Still suffering a very evil hangover I wondered
what all that police cars and motorbikes were
doing in the street.
Than a gigantic limousine passed by, and the two
persons on the back seat were waving to me.
Nice gesture.
They were Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
Pretty fair to great a halfdrunken punk...

I thought Charlie gave up the drink years ago? When did he do that 60 Minutes interview where he said he doesn"t drink or do drugs?

I have met Charlie and Mick Taylor. I am not sure I can say I met Mick and Keith but have been close and gotten their autographs. I have met five Prime Ministers and a few actors.

During their larger than life period I saw all 4 members of Metallica hanging out in a hotel bar, they were very social (except for Lars), Kirk bought me a beer, posed for some photos, signed autographs if people wanted them. They were being decent to people.

Times have changed since then....

my Dad (about 75 at the time) met Muhammed Ali at a wedding......he approached the great Ali shook his hand and said...."hi, i'm from the Joe Louis era"....and Ali, trembling from his ailment, looked down at pappy and delivered with clear wit: "you look like your from the Jack Johnson era"............gotta be a boxing fan to appreciate the references

LOL..thats brilliant. For those too young to appreciate the mock insult, Louis was champ from 1937-49 - Johnson lost his title in 1915!

Nothing of significance, unless we include the following:

a) Jumped on stage at the end of a Who concert in Manchester 1981 and gave
Townshend a hug!
b) Shook Bruce Springsteen's hand at the end of a gig in Manchester 1981.
c) Got Elton John's autograph, December 2003.
d) Met Lisa (kissed her on the hand!), Blondie and Daryl, Manchester, 2003.
e) Shook Ray Davies' hand, Liverpool 2004.

British football players, I try very much to avoid!

I live in Los Angeles and am a big autograph collector, so I've been able to meet hundreds of musicians and celebrities over the years. I've really stepped up my collecting in the past 4-5 years because many musicians I like are getting older and dying off. For instance last night, I went to an event where John Densmore of The Doors was participating and I got a photo with him and some albums signed. After this I went over to an awards show where I got Robin Williams to sign a couple things for me and had Forrest Whitaker sign my platoon laserdisc that I had had Oliver Stone sign the night before when he did a Q & A for his movie World Trade Center.

Over the past few years some of the musicians I've been fortunate enough to meet and get autographs and in some cases photos are 3 Stones (Jagger, Richards and Wood) and a few from the toruing band, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey, 6 Beach Boys (B Wilson, Love, Jardine, Johnston, Rikkia Fatarr and Blondie Chaplin), the 4 members of Pink Floyd (never met Syd), Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, all 3 of the Police, all 4 of U2, Bruce Springsteen and all of the current E Street Band except Federici, Simon and Garfunkel, Willie Nelson, Ray Manzarek, 5 of the 7 members of the Eagles, Slash, Duff, Sorum and Gilby from GNR, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, Joe Strummer, Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Billy Preston, Lou Reed, John Cale, Elton John, the Corrs, the Bangles, INXS, Midnight Oil, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Bob Geldof, Daniel Lanois, the 3 current members of REM, 6 members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Moody Blues, Yes, Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, the Pretenders, Franz Ferdinand, The Cure, Johnny Marr, Elvis Costello, Gene Simmons, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and bunch more. I walked down the street with Bob Dylan as he left a show while a friend of mine pleaded with him to sign, but was completely ignored, so he's one of the few I've had no success with. Jerry Lee Lewis has been tough as well, as I've had no success with him on the 4-5 times I tried.

It gets a bit maddening and time consuming doing all this, but it can still be real exciting when you meet a legend who you really like.

Had beers with Barry Freed (aka Abbie Hoffman) at his hideout in the 1000 Islands. A friend had a place right next to his so was friendly wth him, hence the encounter.

Hell of a list, Halup!

LK, Hank was a nice guy to a young fan in the late 60's. He seems much more distant and bitter now following his home run chase of the Babe. He had a number of fools send him death threats, etc. I hope keeps the record as he did the right way. He still works in the Braves front office and owns a car dealership near Atlanta.

Oh, yeah, I got an e-mail from Leonard K., does that count as a brush with greatness? I think so.
