I dont think people would care for Stones there. They know them already so well and probably most prefer more dance oriented music or modern R&B etc. I think its the lifestyle. And the origin of the Stones, the free 60s.

A long time Tel Aviv was on the "rumoured" list as well. After the accident it dissappeared and never showed up again. Will they ever play Israel? Roger Waters did in summer and it turned out to be the biggest event of the year.

Tel Aviv was also rumoured for a show in 98.

well the politics/religion thing is a bit scary, hugely so...but i bet the day to day person in the street would be as thrilled to see the Stones as anyone anywhere...governments and hyper-religiosos are a major buzzkill to art eveywhere...
as for neighboring Iraq....
Iraq had several popular western rock stations before the current u.s./brit war was introduced to the area...

i would like to see the boys avoid the entire area...too dangerous.
they are shooting reporters for godsake...on all sides from all sides...

...unless mick and one or two of 'em slipped in and out quickly and quietly for an informal USO appearance or two.... for the kids who are being slaughtered and dismembered and otherwise damaged. this could be done but i doubt it will...it might be too much of a huge target for unrest...the Stones represent real freedom, probably, to a lof of rock and rollers all over the world, in place they have never been to or played...and freedom is a bought and sold relative commodity in most places...especially war torn petro-rich deserts.

I knew it had to come!
I say the Stones were not popular there.
I did not say anything at all about muslims.
In fact I loved it a lot in Istanbul.
Sober people who drink tea not beer all night.
Friendly and nice like all over the world.
Please don't make me into like this or don't like that.

It is about culture.
The Stones are performing a western culture.
Rock'n Roll is not part of the culture in these countries.
They have different values simple as that.
And to be honest, I don't think Sympathy For The Devil
or Star Star is really cultural important for the world.
Remember Superbowl had to beeep 2 out of 3 songs.
In Istanbul they did not beep at all...

its not about culture cause the Stones are big in South America....im sure R&R is popular in those country s..its forbidden its dangerous like it used to be here...i think in Turkey the people could not pay the ticket...and the show was..like in the sixties..in Europe with nasty police...we like ''Drift'' we like that brian Jones Album...Why?Whats forbidden is always nice...espcecially..R&r...its a feeling.

Interesting that bv know so much the culture down there. Anyway, bv is wrong. It's not at all about muslim values verses western values. It's about how the relationship between religion and society. Before the revolution Iran was as any other "normal" country with lots of different cultural layers, just like some norwegians love the hardangerfela (traditional norwegian stringinstrument)and some the telecaster. Some even like both without losing their identity. The current regim is not at all representative for iranian values.

Right; this is the crucial point: many people in Iran and Turkey
(even Iraq!) are not Muslims.
Bv, you know a lot about the Stones and rock music etc,
but you sure aint no expert on various cultures.
And just because one have friends from another ethnic group
or nationalty you are not vaccined against stereotypes.

Culture and discussing cultural differences is at least
as difficult and dangerous as discussing politics.

On one hand, I suggest we leave it to other sites,
on the other, I want to straighten this screwed up
topic to get back on the Highway again.

The world became much too polarized from 2001,
and the process were on the run long before that.
The Western civilization and its very foundation: the maternal
sustenance for our "culture" - the agriculture spread from Eufrat-Tigris
and eastwards. With this cultural movement all other progress followed.

Just because some fanatics has manipulated themselves into power
in some Middle Eastern countries, we dont have the right to
say the people there have no interest in the Stones.

My dental hygienist is from Iraq; and I tell you he loves rock'n'roll,
the Stones too.

And I know that and yet my Iranian friends (my alibi) dont care for the Stones and that can be just a personal matter of taste but shen discussed they all say the same thing, the Stones are about a lifestyle not contradicting with theirs (im not talking about Islam), it just doesnt seem to be cool. Modern music, older music, some 60s music, sure, but this is not really a forbidden fruit. Maybe they would have liked them and maybe many Iranians did in 1969. Black culture is part of Europe and the US. Its american (blues, rock n roll) as a matter of fact. Maybe Mick is an idol to some Iranians but they probably have cooler idols.
