If the Stones were allowed to play in Iran, would people come?

Do the Stones have a fan base in the Arab world? Do you think the Iranian people would go to a Stones concert? I wonder???

NO!
And they would never play there.

Thats a pretty far fetched concept to even consider or discuss since "Western Music" (anything not islamic-state approved) is illegal in Iran.

Interesting question. I would say yes people would go. Maybe they couldn't do a 50,000 seat venue, but there would be some fans, some curious people....

I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but it's my understanding that for some time the Iranian youth had been largely more western influenced that other middle east countries. They have had access to western music (even if it may be decades old casettte tapes) and are more familar and exposed to Euorpean and American culture than neighboring countries.

So not all in Iran are as anti-western as their government.

Yes, true, but western music is illegal! There was a great documentary on BBC about the disident youth who were playing in rock bands in hidden locations. THE GOVERNMENT WOULD NEVER LET THE STONES IN! Never.
And to be honest I am pretty sure the Stones would have no desire to play there. A pitty, it is a beautiful country, and the Iranians I know are wonderful.

Yeah. A tongue with the nuclear logo on it. :-)
I don't think they'd be allowed to play there. The closest they got was probably Turkey in 1998.

First of all, the Nikster beat me to it but, Iranians aren't Arabs, they're Persians....

OF COURSE people would come - giant masses if the ticket prices were affordable. Iran has a giant population of younger people and they're IN LOVE with western culture (so far - sans any attack)....on the other hand, after GWB nukes 'em the few that haven't been turned into nuclear dust might have a slight change of opinion....Some of the nicest people on the planet, they just wanna be a part of the party, not turned away at the door..... ALWAYS seperate the people from the Government - in ANY country....

As someone else pointed out, Iran is not an Arab nation, it is Persian. BIG difference. It was a country heavily influenced by the west until such time as it got effectively hijacked in 1979 and became what it is today, a dictatorship under the mullahs. Great shame, wonderful country, lovely people (at least the ones I met), I worked there as a young man in 1978/1979

Sharia Law isn't Stones friendly.

..not that sort of stone, anyway.

getting 'Stoned' takes on a whole different perspective
under Ahmadinejad's regime.

It would be possible, however, for them to play a USO show for the troops in Iraq although I'm sure that would be a security nightmare for all involved.

I'd think they would be more likely to play Israel as Roger Waters did recently. Once again, a security nightmare.

Tehran will get a hometown-themed setlist, to include:-

HANG fire
off the HOOK
coming down again
let it BLEED
Flip THe Switch
SPARKS will fly
one hit (to the body)
Mercy Mercy
No Use In Crying
Terrifying
GUNface
too much BLOOD
it must be HELL
always suffering
pain in my heart
down in the hole

I'm guessing they're going to stay FAR away from anything in the Middle East.

What better way for some nutbag group to get publicity by disrupting such an international event. Or worse, doing something fatal.

Besides, they're pretty much not welcome as others have pointed out. Western music is pretty much illegal, and besides the Stones are POSTER BOYS for capitalism and transgressive immoral behavior.

They've bridged the gap with places like China, but it's been a very tricky eggshell walk fo sure (and I'm sure they had to PAY to PLAY on some level too).

They'd have better luck in Korea.

Perfect place for the debut of NeoCon. And to break out the old line "people, people, who's fighting and what for?"
