OT: Need Elvis suggestion
Posted by: Erik_Snow ()

I've got some Elvis albums (mostly compilations), just about 5 or so. Plus the Aloha from Hawaii and 68 comeback videos.
Could somebody please give me some suggestion on which Elvis albums to get, from the 70s?
There's so many titles out there....is the MSG 1972 gig good?
I think this personal question is interesting for the public too.

One of the best albums by ANYBODY is The Memphis Record - from 1969. Killer band - Elvis at the top of his game, vocally. Been in regular rotation for my since I first started collecting CDs....

Moody Blue was the last one. Sun Sessions from the 50's, of course. The Top Tens covers most of the hits. I dig Elvis, but I'm no expert.

Havent heard much bad since his so called comeback in 68.
Not much bad from before either.

I would go for the complete (well not 'complete' but a lot) fifties masters. A superb 5 cd box, which covers most of his fifties recordings, and with great sound.

Yes, thanks, but I got Moody Blue 10 years ago. Terrific record!

Oh I've listened to them, but I can't go for those boxes right now, expensive and heavy postage....

it's got some of the hits - Kentucky Rain, Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto - but the "filler" material is fantastic.

maybe later, because you definitely want this some day. It's worth buying. Try looking for the best price.

"From Elvis in Memphis" came out in 1969. Along with 'Elvis is Back' (1960) its probably his greatest studio album IMO

"The Memphis Record" is a late 80's compilation which covers the bulk of the two sessions he did at American Studios in Memphis in early 1969 (the first time he'd recorded in Memphis since he left Sun in 1955) - sessions that produced two studio albums (From Elvis in Memphis, Back In memphis) and a selection of other goodies such as Suspicious Minds. Great stuff.

Best studio albums from the 70's - Elvis Country is the best of the lot. A marvellous album, especially the wonderful "I Washed My hands In Muddy Water"

Also get Thats the Way It Is (part live/part studio), Today and Promised Land.

Most of the others are patchy but all have some gems. However, the "Walk a Mile In My Shoes - 70's Masters" 5-cd boxed set rounds up a lot of the good stuff.

The Elvis Gospel (complete version) is excellent if you have a leaning that way (Southern gospel). Most of us in this part of the world have been exposed to it since birth. "Run On" is as good as any song he ever recorded.

ah but which version, baboon ? The 1970 single or the 'Thats the way it is' one? smiling smiley

I like that stuff too. I think 'His Hand in Mine' is a terrific album.

Gazza, does Southern Gospel draw from Irish roots? I know bluegrass and country certainly do.

Thanks Gazza,
yea, that Elvis Country is great, I knew person who had that one...I used to hang around there!
So, if I get the 2cd "Suspicious Minds: The Memphis 1969 Anthology", I've got Memphis covered? Is the material on the other 2 Memphis albums included, or do I have to get them too?

So true, Bro, so true. On a Memphis note, if you like the Elvis Memphis stuff, try Dusty Springfield's "Dusty In Memphis". Don't forget Stax Records either.

Just checked AMG as I find it hard to keep track of all these reissues

Yep..that 2-CD set covers the Memphis sessions in full, plus theres a few alternate takes thrown in.

Thanks again Gazza and everybody!,
There's so many Elvis records that it's hard to keep track of it. That's why I haven't jumped into the Elvis-album-lake yet.
Perhaps I'll make a follow-up-thread in a few months.

MSG concert is great. Listen to the bass solo on Polk Salad Annie

We'd better invite Parachute Man in a follow-up thread.

Its funny Ray Manzarek (in an interview in Keyboard Player once)
thought Elvis was called "Elvin Priestley" till he moved to LA...
Cause that was how the pronounciation at the Southern radio station sounded...

first Ive heard of it, Elmo. "19th century evangelical Americans" it says here

[en.wikipedia.org]

Elvis had Ulster-Scots (Scotch-Irish as its called in the US) ancestry, so its possible he and I may be related.... smiling smiley

"Finding the way home" is a terrific boot, Rockman. If I remember right, it contains a lot of the songs in 'raw' form before a lot of the horns and backing vocals were overdubbed

Great covers Rockman!
I notice the neck of Elvis' bass cast a shadow over the tracklisting!
