If you curious about the US sales, Georgelicks had reported about 2 weeks ago that it was around 522,000 sold, so maybe its a little over 525,000 now.

I guess the sales worldwide approximately is around 2.6 million. Georgelicks knows for sure the exact number.

Hi Georgelicks. Thanks for the info (again). Do you know what the sales in Canada are? I'm guessing just over 100k?

Good to see there are more sick people out there... I bought 10, some Special edition etc, two of each for myself (one for the vaults, one of each to play) and the rest: presents for people who need an introduction to really great music they never would have bought themselves.

Hard to believe that with the 'Stones' having been on tour for a year that ABB has only sold 524,000 copies in the USA.
Yet 'Jump Back'released some months earlier has sold over a 1.0m plus healthy sales again for '40 Licks in the USA.
It would appear that people are buying the 'Stones' greatest hits complilations in the USA and basically are just ignoring their new material.

Yes. I suppose it is their worst ever sale for a new material.

ABB seems to have sold around half (or a little less) the # that Bridges to Babylon sold, thanx no airplay and no more than 4 new ones live at any show, tho they will likely continue to grow slowly.

When the band played at Twickenham the big Tesco store across the road had huge bins full of 40 Licks right where you couldn't miss them - but if they had any ABB's I didn't see them. I bet this isn't the only place where this is so - nobody's promoting ABB, and the band seem to be going along with the record shops' judgment. Pity.

Recalls what happened to the Beach Boys in 1974 - following mediocre sales of their Warners albums "Sunflower" ('70), "Surf's Up" ('71), "Carl & The Passions" ('72) & "Holland" ('72) - all pretty good to pretty great - Capitol's Endless Summer comp of early to mid-60s hits went to # 1 in '74 & essentially changed the BB's from a viable (artistically) band to an oldies revue. Less extreme in the Stones' case ("Sunflower" peaked at # 151, ABB # 3) but it is inevitable for artists with the popularity of the Stones (or Louis Armstrong, for that matter, ) around for 40 years. I do think, with just a little more push from the Stones (5, 6 new ones per show instead of 3 - 4), ABB might have caught more attendees' attention. The songs they did perform were well received by audiences at shows I've been to.

When ABB first came out it was front and center in every music store I went to. It got pretty good exposure. The Stones like other older artists are fighting a battle against demographics these days. The casual fans that grew up listening to the Stones have an average age of 45-50. That't not the age group that buys the most cd's. Therefore only the diehards will buy the new stuff.

Add to that the fact that the music world has changed in the last forty years and the new stuff by older artists doesn't get any airplay. If ABB were released in 1981 if would have had airplay deluxe and sold similar to TY.

I'm also curious as to where these sales figures are coming from? The ablum was certified platinum but only sold around 500k? I hope Georgelicks is not using soundscan numbers since they only count over the counter sales- not online sales.

The album shipped Platinum in U.S, but it sold half of that in stores.

True to a degree, but against that look at how well Dylan's album has sold. And he's less commercially minded than the Stones and isnt playing to anywhere near the size of audiences that they are

Bottom line is that Virgin/EMI promoted the album very badly, and the Stones havent helped matters by all but ignoring it in concet.

Did virgin the same 'good job 'in the States like they did in Europe ?
then there no wonder.
Biggest Mistake is still not available in my hometown. (ca 80.000 people.)

Gazza wrote "Bottom line is that Virgin/EMI promoted the album very badly"

Agree. Bad promotion probably doesn't refer only to the USA. But the difference is that USA is the "capital" of music industry and a real chaos as for the variety of music kinds. Without being supported by a strong marketing you can't do nothing in the "capital" of music marketing! "Capital #2" of the music industry is UK, of course. So, to me is remarkable the fact that ABB sold well in UK.

As for the poor airlpay in USA, call me crazy, call me suspicious, but i believe that this has PARTLY to do with "Neo-Con". Atleast when we are talking about the radio stations of Clear Channel Communications...

agree . Never like the stones, when they do Political--songs

thats not the rolling stones

Havo, maybe we agree as for the policy of Clear Channel Communications. But we strongly disagree about the political side or just political "smell" of the Stones songs. I'm very satisfied when they write songs like Street Fighting Man, Symphathy For The Devil, Salt Of the Earth, Gimme Shelter, Sweet Black Angel, Heartbreaker, Indian Girl, Rock and A Hard Place, Sweet Neo Con. That's a different story, of course, but i want to make clear my opinion. To know, both of us, our agreements or disagreements...
