Frank M's back. He was one of the "departed from IORR", if I remember correctly. There was a melodramatic farewell...

King of Comedy
Goodfellas
Casino
Cape Fear

There ya go. Ten. Off the top of my head.

I never said it wasnt. Its a VERY good film, but far from his best.
I cant rate it against other films released in the last year, because I have hardly seen any. As a big fan and the fact that he's my favourite director, I'm delighted that he won.

There was no "Rock" category at the Grammys between 1967 and 1979 which may explain that oversight, but your point is basically quite valid IMO.

Hmm, whilst I really like cape fear, it think the departed is a much better film. For me, cape fear follows too much of a formula. And in some places a bit over the top, also, the alcoholic semi-retired private detective whom they hire for protection who ends up dead. was too much of a stereotype for me.

I've yet to see the king of comedy.

Very difficult to place his films in a top ten.

it was pretty well done I thought, although you should make a point of seeing the original film as well as Scorsese's remake if you havent done so already.

Hire it tonight and thank me later. It's friggin' hilarious.

Yep, because he's made so many good ones - so its easy (for me anyway) to name at least ten that I thought were very good or excellent.

Gazza, I disagree with you about either Casino, Gangs of NY or Cape Fear being better than The Departed. Casino was GoodFellas with more sleaze, more money and worse clothes (although Sharon Stone and James Woods outshone De Niro and Joe Pesci (playing another nutjob) in that film). Cape Fear was ok, but it was pretty cartoonish (right down to the stop-start-stop ending), and the family strife felt like it was shoved in there to give a prosaic thriller ersatz gravitas (although, again, the film's scariest moment is De Niro's "big bad wolf" scene with Juliette Lewis). Gangs of NY was Daniel Day-Lewis's film. Without him it would have fallen flat on its face.

Sure, he played to his strengths in The Departed (community, Catholicism, violence, treachery, The Rolling Stones - very subtle use of Let It Loose in the first bar encounter between Leo and Jack, hinting at the the Nicholson character's homosexuality: "Who's that woman on your arm/All dressed upo to do you harm" plays as Nicholson takes his seat at the bar ...), but the performances are all top notch, the tension perfectly maintained, and the pay-off suberb. Did you note the "Xs" somewhere on the screen right before a character dies?

Sheen and Wahlberg were not bad guys. The bad guys killed Sheen, a righteous cop.
Whalberg knows Damon is a rat who worked for Nicholson and, subsequently, got Sheen killed.
Wahlberg is the avenging angel putting things right -- the rat, Damon, cannot be allowed to get away with it.

Haven't seen Departed yet but im looking forward to it... i have always loved Scorcese films, Goodfellows and Taxi Driver being my favorites.. but i wasnt that impressed with Casino, it seemed like a Goodfellows spin off with a weaker script...

The Last Waltz is one of my fav concert films...

Thank You Carlos.

The Departed - three great Stones references!

For some reason I have never seen Scorcese's The Departed until yesterday

It is a great movie with Scorcese's usual attention to detail on the soundtrack - two Stones tracks used really effectively

I am also told by my Boston friends that the South Boston accents are spot on

There is a third Stones reference, a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it. I had to rewind but it's here:

Marty really loves the band!
