I Wanna Be Your Man and You’d Better Move from the Rare Video DVD (tracks 2 & 3) is the earliest surviving Stones TV performances. They were performed live on the Arthur Hayes show and date from, I think, either January or February 1964.

I’m sure many here will disagree, but I’m not overall fussed about those 60’s performances. Of course, all the surviving Ready Steady Go and Ed Sullivan appearances are essential viewing, but so much of the rest are mimed and pretty awfully at that!

Eh? Actually, in terms of music and image, the Brian era is my favourite. Its just that there are only so many times you can watch mimed footage of them looking bored! However, the Reasdy Steady Go (best music show EVER!) and the Ed Sullivan performances I could watch all day. I know a few of them are actually mimed too, but it's American and I don't know, seeing colour footage of the Brian era Stones on stage is just fantastic I think!

Sorry Big Al, the Arthur Haynnes show was 7th Feb '64, it was predated by:

640101A 1st January: UK TV (BBC) 'Top Of The Pops', Manchester.
- I Wanna Be Your Man (John Lennon/Paul McCartney) -playback.

About 30" of this still exist and was screened in BBC's 'Sounds Of The Sixties'.

- and every time I think I've got a working YouTube link for the two NME performances (which are really live - very live indeed), some corporate jobsworth from ABKCO makes a complaint and they get taken down again. Snarl curse mutter mutter mumble grumble moan ...

(Yes, I know you can download them, and I have, but this stuff ought to be freely available.)

This is from the Mike Douglas show (june 18th 1964). Available on some British invasion compilation DVD.
