If he has to get CDs, for the early years, the SACDs are MUCH better, than the older releases. Still, no comparison to the vinyl sound, but closer. For the stuff after the ABKCO years, it really doesnt matter.

I have a question too...I still don't know, is the Japanese CD releases in paper-cover better sounding than the usual SACD releases?

The SACD/DSD masters are actually the same:

The SACD's are nice for the digi-pack covers, but the sourround mix is only to be heard if you have an SACD player. They can also be played in a normal cd-player were the sound is DSD remastered.

The DSD remasters has the same sound as the above, but without the SACD layer. Furthermore they are in jewel-cases. And cheaper too.

The Jap.-sleeve collection is the same mastering as the SACD/DSD masters, but with vinyl-replica covers. Very nice.

If I were a new-commer, I would buy the normal DSD-masters. They are easy to handle and are cheaper. They are also the ones which are easiest to find as ABKCO only distribute them now.

As for the 1971-2006 issues, they are all at mid-price in jewel-cases too.

Hope this was helpful.

Good point. Since I have, and assumed, incorrectly, that most everyone has that technology, since its so cheap, I thought only about the SACD. I have the DSD vinyls, and they are nice as well. Not sure about the price differences, since I bought all the sets when 1st released, as well as the Sony DVD/SACD player. Still prefer the original vinyl. The ABKCO years ends with Hot Rocks. But Sticky fingers wasnt mastered onto SACD, that I know of.

Sticky Fingers was not an ABKCO release. It was a Rolling Stones Records release, first on Atlantic, then CBS, and now Virgin.

Havo...

You should check www.abkco.com for the full list of pre-71 releases.

After "Get Yer ya-ya's out!" abkco released:

"Hot Rocks"
"More Hot Rocks" (essential as it contains material not avaliable elsewhere)
"Metamorphosis" (outtakes from the 60's, released 1975)
"The Singles Collection" (essential, it also contains unique material, released 1989)

These are also remastered

I don't see any reason to buy the DSD only discs instead of the DSD / SACD discs because,as stated, the only advantage of the DSD only discs is the jewel case. However, you can buy a 25 pack of jewel cases for cheap ($6 maybe).I bought cdr's with jewel cases and made copies (of the standard DSD layer of course) so that I don't have to worry about the way I handle the discs in my car etc.Depending on where you buy them, you can get the DSD / SACD discs as cheap as you can get the ones without the SACD layer while they last.

I agree. You don't lose anything by buying the hybrid DSD/SACD discs, so if the price is the same, then get em. I should mention that if you have a good quality audio set-up and an SACD player, then the sound is much warmer and more detailed. If you just have a normal dorm room type set up, then even with a SACD player, I can't hear that much difference. Also, note that the SACD masters are NOT surround sound mixes. They are 2-channel stereo, just like the albums and the other CD's. The only exception is the Sympathy mix that is hidden on the remix single issued a few years ago. If you have a 5-channel set up, check it out. It's a little jarring at first, but quite exciting. Makes you wonder how the rest of the catalogue would sound in surround.
