if gimmie shelter were to be used they would have to have a different intro. they use the big bang explosion sound, and then come out to a song that has a noticible loud riff, ie- satisfaction, JJF, start me up, iorr etc. gimmie shelter simmers in, and it would have to be a build up, the explosion thing wouldn't work. could be a great opener, but would require a lot from the band to change.

They need to pick a song not used as an opener before and stick with it, it kinda defines a tour...
JJF '69/'70 BS - '72/'73 HTW - 75'/'76 LET IT ROCK - '78 UNDER MY THUMB - '81/'82 SMU - '89/'90 NOT FADE AWAY - '94/'95 SATISFACTION - '97/'98 JJF - '99
I always thought Mother's Little Helper would be a cool opener, with Mick taking the stage and singing those opening lyrics.
Also The Last Time would work pretty well. Too many of their 60s songs seem to be forgotten and everyone would know many of the songs. I thought Not Fade Away was a very interesting idea for the opener in 94/95 and was a very unique and different tempo to start the show.
I think Sympathy would be a great opener if they reworked it to sound more like the Ya'Ya's version with Keith hitting the E-D-A-E on his guitar right from the get-go. I feel that the recent version opening with Charlie and Chuck has gotten old.
I think Gimmee Shelter would be cool, too. The GS Second night Buenos Aires this February was amazing! Better than the versions on previous recent tours by far, in my opinion.

Hound Dog - they wouldn't do that one. Think of how the press would jump all over the "what a drag it is getting old" line. The Stones get enough flack about their age without having to bring it their attention, why set them up with an easy joke.
Cindy I see your point but Jagger has made references about his age in other songs they still do. Wouldn't think they would not play a song just because of what the press may say.
I think Mother's Little Helper is just another tune from a big group of 60s hits that they have either never played or not done since the mid-60s. Think about how many songs they have on various greatest hits albums that they have either never done live or haven't done in over 38 years, pretty crazy.
SFTD won't happen as an opener. Not unless they shorten it, which they wouldn't do. They don't open (Sydney theater show '03 notwithstanding) with their longer tunes. And, it makes me gag to think that a Stones show would open with an electronic drum. Pee Yoo.
ONE HIT - a GREAT song but from the few versions I've heard from '89 (Toronto Pro shoot Video for one) it seems like one or more of the boys has troble keeping time with their Guitar. On the Toronto tape I think Keith comes in late with the loud electric. IOW, it takes them a good 20 - 30 seconds to get in sync. That's probably why you never hear it now.
MOTHERS LITTLE HELPER - yeah, the "old" reference would open the door to a million "clever" headlines. They could change it to "What a drag it is not being bold" in reference to how safe they've played it with this tour's set list. How about "What a drag all the tickets haven't sold". Would love to hear it myself so I "feel your pain" Glad they did CLOUD, AS TEARS GO BY, and PAINT IT BLACK on this tour
HOT STUFF and STAR STAR, hmm , just DO NOT seem like openers to me at all.The singing comes in way to soon on STAR STAR.
STREET FIGHTING MAN would be alright IMHO.
UNDERCOVER sounds like a good 2nd or 3rd song. Worked well as #4 on the 1989 tour
EMPTY HEART - Jackpot, played like IF YOU CAN'T ROCK ME (which would be another good opener.)

Never quite sure if there were electronic drums preceding Charlie coming in there - in either event, I never thought NFA worked very well as a opener. Good in theory, bad in execution. The guitars were a mess.
