I wonder about one thing concerning I Don'T Know Why....
I think that the outro..or the tail..of the song is just a replay of the middle-part. It's not played twice, that slide solo, it's just a tape-replay.
On the bootleg version, there isn't such a tail, the song just ends.
And if you listen closely, it's exactly the same.
Is that correct?
If it is...is it the only time you can hear parts from a song, twice, on a RS record (apart from the obvious tails on Dandelion and We Love You)?

Erik - that is a good point. I always wondered why they ended that song there on the boot. And you are right, to me, it sounds exactly the same.

I confess I have some suspects with the chorus of Streets of Love ...

I Don't Know Why is absolutely one of my most favorite Stones tunes.....Stevie Wonder's original version is inspirational, the Stones version is steamy....and Mick's vocal are something to wonder ............the newest version by The Brand New Heavies is pretty hip................

Thanks for posting that Rip This. I liked it, she has a good voice. It doesn't have those great guitars, but still works very well.

Rumoured to be recorded right after the telephone call
about Brian's death at July 2. Same with I'm Goin' Down.

It's not only the solo that is copied; it's also the drum intro they spliced from the second bar of the drum intro to the first solo.

I love this song, but I have always wondered why they didn't record a "proper" version of it. This version has some mistakes in it like crooked drum fills, a piano that is hesitating as several points and the weird ending. Apparently they had enough material of their own at this point.

By the way, a great listen after a long time. I actually was amazed by th sheer power of this song and especially Jiving Sister Fanny. This remembered me again of how encredibly good the Stones were. Check out Bill Wyman pumping on JSF!

JSF should be put up on the setlist. Let's keep that topic up!

Oh yea, thanks.
BTW, I meant...everything after the break was copied, not only the solo.
But it's nice to get it confirmed.

not only the guitars but it doesn't have the visceral emotional edge that both Stevie Wonder and the Stones gave the song...otherwise it's a cool version as backdrop during a party...etc...

Who knows? There were probably more takes recorded and are on a mastertape somewhere, waiting to be heard!
Oh there is so much material, how about the Love In Vain version from Beggars Banquet sessions? And the multiple takes from No Expectations (both not leaked yet unfortunately)

Oh that would be a great day indeed if more from that session ever came out. I would absolutely LOVE to hear that!

I used to have the main riff of that on my answering machine about 20 years ago. People would always ask what it was, and thought it was such a cool sound. It was my dream at the time to show all those stupid hair bands what good music really was!

Does anyone know who is credited officially with the Sax on IDKW?

Are we sure btw that that is Bill Wyman on Bass and not Keith on DSF?

Another curio re. "Driving Sister" is IMO that Charlie plays the ride cymbal; and even pretty mellowat that. The reason this strikes me is that a song like DSF is one of those tunes that other bands would consider a typical Stones-type song had they thmesleves written it. Eg. Paul Westerberg' "Silver Naked Ladies" or Elton';s "Saturday Night". When other bands try reproducing the Archetype Stones sound they invaribaly overdo it and fail. they will have every sus chord known to man, the midrange cranked up on slides and Teles, and the drummer will hit it very hard on Hi Hat and snare. The last thing they'd do on song like this is have the drummer lazily hang back and carress the ride cymbal. Yet Charlie Watts is such a badass that this is exacvtly what he ends up doing.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

The jackson 5 actually did a pretty decent version of I Don't Know Why as well on their ABC album ( I'm listening to it right now ). Definitely closer to the Stevie version and maybe a little too fast but great vocals for a 10(?) year old and really nice , epic strings. No Taylor on guitar though.

Thank ya Andrew for the tip omn J5; not too surprising, but anyway.

I wanna repeat that Jiving Sister Fanny (put into the topic bu Mathijs)
ought to be on the setlist. Europe 2007?
(And please do not play any ABBA tune! winking smiley )
