I know the electric version's I think.. but listening to the acoustic version from the 95 stripped sessions. I wanna play this! Is that a 12 string and how is this version played? What key are those nice flamenco fills played in? Are they open chords?

Thanks in advance

seems like the Stones need to re-learn to play it - and i wish they would! BOB (one of the all time greats) has been sorely missing since the beginning of the tour last year . . .

By the way, I don't like the way Keith changed the riff in the last years.

The '78/'81/'82 were so much groovier.

Mathijs, that's exactly what I mean. That's how the song is supposed to be played.

The Hampton version is about as good as music gets . . .

Of course hampton and the early versions are great, but I only play acoustic. I have played the orginal way on an electric before but I love the sound Keith got from the 95 acoustic version and the barre chords on the electric don't sound nice acousticly. So if anyone would like to help me. I know you have better things to do....

Ernie Watts makes this one happen....

I don't see Ernie Watts doing anyhting noteworthy. I';m just glad that this is not one of the songs he ruines by playing all over it, the way he does on other tunes. What makes it though are Keith in BU vox and a great shirt/vest combo.
The groove of course cna never ever be reproduced nowadays since we don't have Bill Wyman on Bass. The Bass on this song is vital. The way Bill plays it DJ would not play it in a million years. DJ is too good, too sophisticated. Bill plays with a pick, he is loud and trebly, slightly flanged. He plays like a white boy who is playing a guitar with 4 strings. Lots of rootnotes and fifths. Perfect for Stones groove when coupled with Charlie's jazzy-rock whacks and Keith's syncopated riffing.
DJ went from too much chromatic running to over emphasizing the muddy thumping of rootnotes. He is like a panzer down there. I do believe DJ has the right intention; he just doens't get it.
With DJ I get the impression he is playing down, where aS Bill was playing up.

Good to see the artist formerly known as Nikki back.

Geez,

After a long, hard day, try this:

- Take a warm shower
- Put on some comfortable slippers
- Listen to Beast of Burden

You'll melt, honest to god.

I absolutely totally agree. Right on the mark. But I have also always thought of this version and of the Hampton version as the absolute weaving: both Wood and Richards play lead and rythm, and they are really listening to eachother, and constantly finish eachothers riffs. The total soundscape becomes bigger than just two guitars. Check for example the intro on the Phoenix gig.

Beast of Burden live has lost its swing since DJ has joined the band.
This is really one of my favourites but I find most post 94 versions quite boring.
Bill Wyman was definitively a big loss which had a huge influence on the sound of the band.

I get chills watching that video. In the video Keith takes to the runway on his left, slams to knees and plays. In '81 I had the first seat next to where he came and did just that...walked over at a fast pace, fell to his knees, and put his guitar about two feet from my face, played, looked me in the eye, then winked, and strutted away. One of my favorite moments ever!!!!!

Hey yeah, thats a mighty fine version of BoB on youTube.
Its from Lets Spend the Night Together - right?
btw, who is the saxophon player?

watching the video and THEN listening to the version on Stripped Companion - it becomes - well um, err, - quite stale.

I forget we have a few guitar players here; myself as well. Personally, for me the I prefer the guitars on the'81'tour as best of the Ron Wood era, but to write off Ernie Watts playing on this tune as "nothing noteworthy" is like saying Charlie's playing is irrelevant. Yeah, the guitar playing is at its best here and you gotta love Bill, but for me Ernie makes this tune come alive.
