What is the Stones best and worst Stones/Solo Album Cover & Why?
Posted by: neilly43 ()

Just been reading the Charlie on the front of Get yer YaYas Out and thought that I had'nt seen this topic discussed before. Apologies if it has but I would be interested to know what the consensus on the board is.
My fav is indeed Get Yer YaYas Out as it makes me smile
The worst must be Primitive Cool. Yours?

Best: "Through the past darkly" - though it's a compilation,
not sure if it counts...
Worst: "Primitive cool" too. One of the worst album covers I know.

Dirty Work, Flashpoint, BTB, aren't great designs.

Let It Bleed, Ya Ya's, are two of my faves.

B2B is a great cover. It's different, unique and very mature. I'd say it's one of their best.

Flashpoint is bad! Sucking in the 70's, Made in the shade aint to hot either. Steel Wheels is just very eighties.
Dity work is funny cause you can feel the tension. Even Wood looks very stiff.

The best have got to be the early albums...... out of our heads, aftermath, 1St album......

Worst has to be Satanic Majesties: shrouded in an LSD cloud of hippiedom that never sat comfortably with the Stones. Also agree with other postings re Flashpoint. Never liked Undercover artwork.

My personal faves are:-

Still Life: love the artwork

Love You Live: Mick to a "T"

Goats Head Soup (Keef looks positively charred)

Its Only RnR: again artwork

The slide out/cut out Some Girls cover fuelled many an adoloescent fantasy.

Those bras man!!

Let It Bleed: love the imagery front to back.

Solo Primative Cool is baaaaaaaaddddddddd but liked Lets Work

Best Stones cover: "A Bigger Bang" or "Sticky Fingers".

Worst Stones cover: "Emotional Rescue" (Not counting the horrible Decca compilations from the seventies, in which case it would be "Rock 'n Rolling Stones).

Best solo cover: Keith's "Main Offender" or Mick Jagger's "Goddess In The Doorway".

Worst solo cover: Mick Jagger's "She's The Boss".

I think the qualities of the cover art followed the quality of the Stones' music surprisingly closely. Hence, Beggars Banquet (a favourite of mine), Let It Bleed, Ya-Ya's, Sticky Fingers and Exile are amazing artistic creations, while Goats Head Soup is a step down but very cool, IORR is yet another step down (too generic), and Satanic is out of character but interesting and typical for its time. Some Girls is a big step up from Black And Blue and shows some of the creativity of the golden era, just like the record itself.

My least favourite has got to be A Bigger Bang. The front picture is great, but the rest is just one hell of a good chance wasted. In terms of package design it is a minor disaster (just look at the inner picture -- a part closeup of the front cover...). The front, still, is better than those of all previous albums since Tattoo You.

ghs was not on my top of the list..

but i think black and blue was cool...i liked the one when the girl was all tied up...i'm sure womens rights groups kept that from being released...ha..

I always thought that the cover of Emotional Rescue was like, so bad it's good. It's like it goes so far down to the bottom on the scale of sucky, that it actually goes around and comes out the other side as cool. Especially when it was vinyl, which originally came with the poster on the outside, and you get it home and unfold the poster and it's like, WTF? Who ARE these people in these pictures? Are these even the Stones? Do I even want this poster at all? The images aren't even that good. I'm not sayin' I think it's their best cover, or anything, just talkin' about it.

Anybody else besides me think that the inside gatefold of Beggar's Banquet should have been the outside? I dunno. I've always thought that shot would have made a better cover, even than the toilet or whatever.

The cover of No Security is dreadful!

Favourite is Through The Past (Gatefold version).

how true about er...i remember coming home when it was 1st released...wow a poster....its going to be cool...i open it and said what is it?
i didn't like it,hate it..just left it by the side... kind of a waste of money, paper....

in a way its the same feeling i get with the album..some tracks i love ,others i hate.. kind of forget the album and cover...

p.s. anyone still have the post cards from the exile on main street album?

Best is surely Sticky Fingers - that was a Warhol classic.

Worst: I've just bought A Bigger Bang and maybe it's just that I'm getting old(er) - but I can't read the back of the CD - the print is TINY

My favourites are the first two LP's because they look so mean and moody. On the Decca versions there is of course no writing on the sleeve, so the images do the talking. Fantastic!

My least favourites are Steel Wheels and No Security.

i always dug the Sticky Zipper cover.........with the real zipper on the lp........cool pop-art.........and the Robert Frank collage on Exile is cool........also, like the Aftermath "purple tint" cover shot....and the striking close-up shot for the Black & Blue cover

The Flashpoint artwork works with the singles: Highwire, Sex Drive, Jumpin' Jack Flash...
I love: Exile, Beggars (but not the bathroom one!), Some Girls, Let It Bleed, London Singles (if it was in colour)...
Hate: Primitive Cool, Rewind, Jump Back,...

All the post '83 covers suck. They are very bland--wtf is that thing on Voodoo Lounge?--what's with the goofy smiles and poses on ABB?-I do like the special edition cover-simple powerful branding.

How about some Johnny Cash American series or recent Bob Dylan (TooM, L&Th) natural/organic style photography?

I did like Bridges w/ the slipcover but not w/o--too slick/airbrushy.

Maybe I would like Dirty Work if I liked the album.

All the previous stuff to me exudes attitude/mystery/darkness--coolness.

You all seem to dislike the ART-work covers. (I agree, I want to see the band.) So: Are the Stones themselves on the cover? That might be the question! That's why IORR (am I in the right forum...) and Let It Bleed are so fantastic -- because it isn't the "real" Stones.
Are there any Stones members on the cover since Dirty Work?! Dirty Work was done by Annie Leibovitz, so it ought to be a classic. And though the boys look (fill in the gap) it tells you more about the band than a regular cover. The only exception was Stripped by Anton Corbijn who did great shots in b/w around Voodoo Lounge, too - but he insisted on "using masks"?!
Why didn't they want to be photographed for the front? Was that Mick's decision? Was that Virgin's/Sony's decision?
