Putting the Band together, being the manager, promo man, playing all those great blues, then shifting to all the other instruments....and just being Brian...so much came out of him so early, he was bound to burn out. Thanks, Brian...

My favourite musical contribution of Brians is his slide solo on. I Wanna Be Your Man

btw, I like those shots from the Alexandra Palace gig. I saw The Strokes there in 2003 and while it's undoubtedly a wonderful building, it's a crap live venue. For those who don't know, its basically a huge hall and if you're right at the back, you can't see a thing!

As has been mentioned already, he got the whole thing started. Without Brian, possibly no Rolling Stones. Musically he added the versatility to play many instruments. I love Ronnie & Mick T and all they have done, but have always wished Brian could have been able to right himself. I would have love to see Brians take on punk & disco and where he would have tried to steer the band.

Roadster 32, you better go home and do your homework! There is a lot to read and study about Brian. Brian was a VERY good swimmer. He founded the group so No Brian - No Stones simple as that. Perhaps you have seen the movie Stoned, that is a piece of crap, just a handful details are correct in that movie the rest is crap.

Founding the band, promoting it in the early days, making the band musically diverse and being a genuine rebel.

Without Mr.Shampoo as Mick & Keith nicknamed him as he was always washing his hair upto twice a day there would have been no 'Rolling Stones'
Brian was the founder member of the band played excellent slide guitar, harp and could play any instrument that he picked up .
His ability to add an extra dimension of sound and versatility to 'Stones' songs is highlighted on 'Paint it Black/Ruby Tuesday/Under my Thumb/Lady Jane/We Love You/Lets Spend the Night Together and many more.
Unfortunately he lived life to the excess and was taken over by drugs which created his alter-ego which has been described many times as the rock star who beat women up and was despised by anyone that had anything to do with him.
Brian's excesses alienated him from the other members of the band and the final straw was when Mick/Keith decided that the 'Stones' if they were to keep their popularity would have to write and play harder based rock songs such as Jumpin Jack Flash & Street Fighting Man.
Brian openly rebelled at the 'Stones' moving away from their R & B roots by failing to turn up for recording sessions and when he did he was in such a drug fueled state that he had nothing to offer becoming a liabilty and eventually he forced the 'Stones' to replace him.
Stones fans have a lot to thank Brian for but at the sametime if he had of continued with the band then they would all of self-destructed and we would not be talking about them today.

That was a good post and I agree with the first part.

You raise an interesting point in your conclusion. It's certainly possible as you state that they might have self destructed. However, from what I've read it sounds like Brian had finally started pulling himself together.

Unfortunately we'll never know if Brian would have been able to to pull that off. Most folks with the kind of problems Brian had would not have been able to pull that off. However, to be fair Keith's problems have also threatened the band's life many time.

Of course the band had more experience by then and perhaps they were able to deal with it better by then. I wonder if there are any parallels of things like this with other bands? Most well know musicians in the 60's left their band by overdose.

Personally I feel that the Stones started to become really interesting from 1968 on, and coincidentally or not, they started to become interesting when Jones wasn't involved anymore. Until 1968 they were a great band, but they were on par with many '60's band. They were musically even with bands like The Kinks, Smnall Faces, Beach Boys, Traffic and what more. Starting with Beggars Banquet, the Stones sudenely shifted from "a great band" to "the greatest R&R Band in the World". I have always felt that this was partly due to Jagger and Richards getting rid of this monkey on their back named Brian Jones. So in my opinion the best thing Brian did with the Stones was to form them, to play on Aftermath, and then to leave them.

I wonder what he would look like today if he were alive, Large and Hairless perhaps?
Do you think he'd still fit in if he were alive and still in the band?

I couldn't envision Brian ever playing Disco tunes like Emotional Rescue and/or Miss You, could you?
Brian was Ronnies destiny!
